We are currently seeking a candidate for the position of Systems Engineer to join our team in Burnaby, BC. In this role the successful candidate will primarily be responsible for cross functionally defining what a product should do and confirming it meets requirements. This multidisciplinary role requires a good knowledge and experience of power systems hardware interfacing with real-time embedded firmware. A solid demonstration and understanding of Systems Engineering thinking, processes and responsibilities is key. Experience in the Solar/Renewables Industry is preferable but not a necessity.

 

Key Responsibilities:

1.1.Requirements Analyst: Forms strong relationships with all parts of the project team: marketing, electrical, mechanical, service, compliance, quality, reliability and manufacturing.  Works with the project team to define system-level requirements and translate them into specific functional requirements for software teams. 

 

1.2. System/Functional Tests Works with wider engineering development teams to create an appropriate overall system integration and verification/validation test plan.  Creates and maintains high level validation plan, validation tests and traces between requirements, specifications, tests, etc. Work with DVT and software teams to ensure test coverage is assured “as far upstream” in the test environments as possible.

 

1.3. Issue Management: Contributes to the management and maintenance of life cycle issues related to the Systems Issues, particularly those that are cross-functional activities involving problem solving.

 

1.4. Troubleshooting: Hands on coordinating or directly troubleshooting system/sub-system level challenges/issues that arise from integration, verification and validation testing. Requires strong written and verbal communication skills.

 

1.5. System Design Documentation: Prepare system design documentation, such as Interface Specifications, Signal lists, System Variables, etc. Sensor definitions.  The Systems Engineer will often tackle design areas where multiple functions are interacting, coordinate the various functional teams to converge and a solution and create the supporting documentation or do the work directly. Support technical documentation team in the preparation and review of product manuals, application notes, and service documentation.

 

1.6. Technical Management: Create/maintain technical work break down structures and estimate effort levels for deliverables. Have a key understanding of team and task inter-dependencies. Identify key project risks and propose containment, mitigation & corrective actions. Exposure to Agile & Hybrid processes are an advantage, but not a necessity.

1.7. Continuous improvement: Provides input and supports driving forward the continuous improvement of cross-functional practices and methods with strong bias towards contributing to team initiatives.

 

Qualifications

 

 Education & Experience:  

 

2.1. Education & Experience:  Bachelor’s Degree (minimum) in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or equivalent. 5+ years proven experience in a cross functional engineering role.

 

2.2. Qualifications: General mechatronic competency (mechanicals, electrical, power, sensors, electronics, controls, software, embedded firmware, communications). Excellent organizational skills, documentation ability, attention to detail. Goal oriented; ability to maintain the greater picture while operating in the details. Structured approach to troubleshooting and problem solving.

 

2.3. Desired Experience/Skills: High power (utility scale) bi-directional converter knowledge, Industrialization knowledge, Analog, mixed, and power electronic circuit design including microcontrollers, DSPs and FPGAs. Experience with requirements management tools such as Integrity.  CAD/CAE or simulation tools such as PSPICE, Matlab, etc. Embedded systems and applications.

 

2.4. Working Conditions / Environment / Special Requirements: Availability for typically 20% domestic and international travel. Availability for up to travel for up to 2-3 weeks at a time.
