This is a one year contract appointment position with the possibility of additional year contract appointment extensions. Per the University of California (UC) recruitment policy, because this position has undergone competitive recruitment, this position can be converted to career status any time after hire, as conversion meets criteria set by UC recruitment policy and the needs of the Office of Information Technology department.
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides enterprise class services to the staff, faculty, and students of UC Irvine. The Enterprise Unix Services (EUS) team within OIT supports critical campus services that use the Linux operating system and associated open source and custom-built applications.
Applies advanced systems infrastructure concepts and campus, medical center or Office of the President or institutional objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Selects methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results. Gives presentations to associated team and other technical units. Evaluates new technologies including performing moderate to complex cost/benefit analyses. May lead a team of systems/infrastructure professionals.
Commensurate with experience.
5+ years of experience operating large scale Linux environments.
3+ years of experience developing infrastructure solutions and specifying system requirements.
Five (5) to ten (10) years relevant experience with BA/BS in related field, or three (3) to five (5) years relevant experience with MA/MS in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience OR equivalent experience.
Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
Basic knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.
Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
Demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution. Experience with design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning of technology systems.
Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software.
Experience leading a team of IT professionals.
Experience with network technologies, especially DNS, VLANs, firewalls, and load balancers
Experience installing, configuring, optimizing and maintaining Apache Web services
Experience installing, configuring, optimizing and maintaining Apache Tomcat.
Must pass a background check.
Experience developing cloud technologies and services, especially AWS. Experience programming in Python or Go. Experience with configuration management tools, especially Terraform and Ansible
Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
Advanced experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration. Understanding of ITIL framework. Familiarity with installation, configuration, monitoring and optimization of Database environments.
