Job Description:


The Solar Systems and Applications Engineer is responsible for assuring that GAF’s solar offering meet all technical requirements for deployment in the various solar markets and for making sure that user concerns are adequately addressed.  The candidate will understand the evolving requirements of the solar industry and make sure that those requirements are adequately considered in any new product designs or revisions.  The candidate will also work closely with GAF’s codes and R&D groups to assure that solar product testing is properly managed and that proper information is shared internally and to the field for inspections, sales, training and future designs.

The candidate will build relationships with the different testing houses that look at solar products, including the various specialized electrical and mechanical testing that solar products endure.  The individual will manage the relationships with the testing groups to make sure that necessary tests are understood and completed on an appropriate timeline.  The candidate will have a mature understanding of the solar industry and will maintain industry contacts and relationships, building effective partnerships.  The candidate will also document all processes and agreements

The Systems and Applications engineer will work with the business to assure that all application instructions and sales materials are clear and usable by the field.  They will be able to work cross functionally within the solar group and with GAF codes, R&D, purchasing and legal to make sure that timelines are clear and are adhered to and that design changes that impact timelines are well understood and to make recommendations that improve timelines or allow for the use of alternative suppliers.  They will be a good communicator who also is able to represent GAF with the various technical groups.  


35-40%    Manage testing laboratories and project timelines and effectively communicate any changes and risks to broader team

25-30%    Create and manage all installation and technical materials, code equivalent and certifications

20-25%    Create permit packages and installation rules for GAF sourced and managed programs, provide feedback to field on technical specification.  Provide guidance to suppliers and service providers on all technical requirements

5-10%      Other duties as needed

Technical knowledge/skills (Expected Mastery Level à Intermediate to Advanced)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, science or engineering
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience with at least 3 in technical solar field
  • Industrial manufacturing experience preferred
