Full Job Description

This role provides enterprise coordination, subject-matter leadership, and standard-setting for ED nursing practice across Baystate Medical Center, Baystate Noble, Baystate Franklin, and Baystate Wing. The ED Nursing Director partners closely with regional CNOs, site ED nurse managers, and ED physician leadership to ensure consistency, reliability, and excellence across all EDs.

Strategic & Operational Planning

  • Serves as the enterprise nursing expert on ED operations, clinical standards, workflows, and care models
  • Contributes to the development of the nursing and organizational strategic plan for BH system.
  • Communicates and executes strategic priorities with clear linkage to measurable outcomes.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates policies, programs, and services aligned with the health system’s mission, nursing vision, and strategies priorities.

  • Plans and executes system-wide strategies to improve LWBS, quality, safety, patient experience, nurse engagement, and alignment with the 2030 strategic plan
  • Drives measurable improvements in throughput, quality, safety, experience, and nursing engagement
  • Leads development and refinement of system dashboards, operational metrics, and the ED Surge Tool
  • Leads and supports EM aspect of enterprise throughput initiatives, including Code Capacity, Shared Admission, and Level Loading
  • Uses analytics and operational data to identify trends and opportunities that influence long-term planning.
  • Collaborates with leaders across the community hospitals to design and implement strategic initiatives.
  • Develops annual operational plans that align with system priorities.
  • Collaborates with medical directors and service-line leaders to design evidence-based programs.

  • Ensures nursing care delivery models support individualized, evidence-informed patient care.
  • Collaborates with peers to define strategic direction for nursing practice across all community hospitals.
  • Promotes a culture of clinical excellence, shared governance, and nursing research.

Collaborative Relationships

  • Builds strong interprofessional relationships to support coordinated, seamless patient care across the continuum.
  • Partners with regional CNOs and site ED teams to ensure local performance improvement work aligns with system goals
  • Offers guidance, coaching, and strategic support to site ED nurse managers in collaboration with their regional CNOs
  • Facilitates standard work for ED nursing care delivery for BH (all facilities) working closely with operational ED leadership of community hospitals
  • Co-leads the monthly ED Service Line meeting with the Physician Vice Chair of Operations
  • Represents Nursing in system-level discussions with executive leadership and governance bodies.
  • Engages in system committees, councils, and community partnerships.
  • Collaborates with the system ED education specialist to establish initial and ongoing education and competency for all ED roles within BH

Evidence-Informed Practice & Research

  • Supports nursing research and evidence-informed practice initiatives.
  • Applies research findings to strengthen practice standards and care delivery models.
  • Reviews nursing research proposals to ensure appropriate resources and alignment with clinical priorities.
  • Leads collaborative nursing research and Evidenced Base Practice within BH Eds
  • On behalf of BH: regularly publishes in national professional journals and delivers podium presentations at national conferences on ED/Trauma content

Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
