*** Utilize radical polymerization, ring opening metathesis, epoxy-thermoset reactions, and similar techniques to synthesize polymer systems.
*** Synthesize coupling agents such as silane coupling agents and phosphonates to create self assembled monolayers, improve adhesion between inorganic surfaces and polymers, and similar.
*** Perform surface functionalization of aluminum surfaces with their native oxides to attach various polymers or self-assembled monolayers.
*** Fabricate and test lap shear specimens to determine adhesive performance of various surface treatments and polymers and analyze fracture surfaces to determine types of failures (cohesive, adhesive, mixed mode, and similar).
*** Characterize materials using Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermal Gravimetric Analysis, and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis.
*** Conduct surface analysis using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Contact Angle Goniometry, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy to quantify atomic concentrations of surface modified carbon materials and polymers.
