Job Description

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

The salary range for this position is $133,046 to $174,192.

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Level System Engineer to join the R&D team at IonQ. We are leading the development of world-class quantum computers to address some of the world’s most challenging problems. This role will significantly focus on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics, blending advanced research with practical engineering to push the boundaries of quantum computing technology.

In this position, you will be instrumental in driving the fusion of theoretical research and applied engineering, working closely with a team of physicists and engineers. The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in systems engineering, with a strong background in physics and a proven track record of innovative, research-driven project completion.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with physicists to review technical papers and research findings, using these insights to inform the development of trade studies and initial performance requirements.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in quantum computing and related fields to ensure our approaches are grounded in cutting-edge knowledge and data.
  • Support the design and specification of quantum computer systems, focusing on the integration of AMO physics principles and findings from ongoing research.
  • Translate complex research concepts into practical engineering solutions that can be implemented in hardware development.
  • Develop and lead trade studies that leverage academic research to support data driven decision-making processes in design and material selection.
  • Analyze system and subsystem requirements to ensure they align with the latest scientific understandings and project objectives.
  • Oversee the integration of subsystems, ensuring that each component reflects the intended design and functions as part of the whole according to system specifications.
  • Conduct system-level testing to verify that all requirements are met, integrating findings from recent research to refine testing protocols.
  • Develop and manage key performance parameters, reporting on system capabilities and adjustments needed based on ongoing research and development insights.
  • Provide detailed documentation and engineering support for systems, ensuring all modifications and updates are well-documented and based on empirical research findings.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time, to support testing and operational responsibilities.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field, with a strong emphasis on AMO physics.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in a research-oriented systems engineering role, preferably within a quantum computing environment.
  • Proven ability to synthesize scientific research into actionable engineering tasks and projects.
  • Excellent communication and data visualization skills, capable of bridging the gap between theoretical physics and practical system engineering.
  • Proficiency in technical performance tracking and familiarity with engineering tool suites and model-based engineering practices.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • M.S. or PhD in Engineering, Physics, or related field with specialization in AMO physics.
  • Extensive experience in system design and assembly, particularly within quantum computing or other high-precision technological fields.
  • Strong publication record or demonstrated experience in applying research findings to product development.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python, Java, Matlab, or similar programming languages used in scientific research.
  • INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) certification or similar.
