Job Description

The Mechanical Systems, Externals and Nacelle (MSEN) organization is the recognized leader in the design, development and support of reliable, elite architecture, providing the best value, shortest cycle-time and the highest quality to meet customer requirements. Within the Externals Part Family, we are seeking a motivated, diligent design engineer to join our team.

You will work with inter-disciplinary teams, performing mechanical design of fuel, hydraulic, lubrication, electrical and air management plumbing and harness systems hardware. This requires creative design skills in engine hardware arrangement and packaging to achieve maintainable, low cost systems while meeting structural and functional requirements. Externals hardware includes a vast and challenging array of parts including tubes, brackets, electrical harnesses, component mounts, and fan bypass ducts. Virtually every module on a Pratt & Whitney engine incorporates designs from our group.

All design work will utilize Unigraphics software along with in-house tools. Opportunities are available on both military and commercial programs including the Geared Turbofan Family of engines being developed for the Airbus NEO, Bombardier C-series, Embraer and Mitsubishi Regional Jet, as well as the F135 engine for the Joint Strike Fighter.

There are several positions available, final grade level determined by experience and qualifications.

Key job functions:

  • Develop technically sound design solutions while negotiating space requirements, cost and weight goals within program schedule.
  • Understand technical processes and design requirements of gas turbine externals hardware including plumbing and ducting systems, component mounts, sheet metal brackets and electrical harnesses.
  • Learn and apply sophisticated solid modeling and analysis tools in a highly proficient manner.
  • Utilize standard work, QCPC, and other ACE tools to continuously improve the externals design process.
  • Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics (cost, weight, performance, etc).
  • Effectively provide direction to others
  • Complete complex tolerance stacks for fit.


  • BS in mechanical or aerospace engineering


Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering is required
  • 6+ years of experience in mechanical design or project engineering
  • U.S. citizenship required due to government contracts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in engineering
  • Experience with CAD solid modeling (i.e Unigraphics) and finite element analysis tools such as Ansys
  • Demonstrated communication and teaming skills with both internal and external customers.
  • Proficiency in Teamcenter or other PLM system
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing, including complex tolerance analysis
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and methods
