Principal Responsibilities:

  • Functions as a central mechanical engineering expert across the R&D organization
  • Works with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to solves difficult technical issues with a methodical, data-driven approach
  • Leads engineering team through demonstrated technical excellence and implementation of engineering best practices
  • Conceptualize new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design
  • Create novel design solutions that expand the business’s intellectual property
  • Ensures that program objectives are determined and met, and logistics are effectively coordinated
  • Exhibits and instills decision-making based in objective engineering principles (analytical and empirical)
  • Develops test methods and models
  • Identifies, communicates, and mitigates project risks
  • Ensures executional compliance to all applicable internal requirements and external regulations
  • Leads technical reviews and design reviews or acts as an independent reviewer
  • Supports animal studies and clinical evaluations
  • Develops team through mentorship, training, and adoption of development best practices
  • Builds and maintains positive and cooperative relationships internally and externally
  • Maintains expert knowledge in current and novel technologies
  • Engages team across Abbott to utilize the latest technology and expertise across the business
  • Engages with industry regulators (FDA, BSI, etc.) to explain novel designs or technical analysis in support of device submissions
  • Position may require up to 15% travel


  • Strong history of cross-functional collaboration with other engineering disciplines (Electrical, Manufacturing, etc.)
  • Experience designing for relevant manufacturing processes (e.g. biocompatible material selection, printed circuit board fabrication, machining, injection molding, extrusion, metal forming, welding)
  • Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (Solidworks/Pro-E)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical device design controls (21 CFR Part 820) and project management
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of sound design principles and practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge of root cause investigation
  • Experience applying statistical techniques to inform design decisions (e.g. Design for Six Sigma, Design for Manufacturability)
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of relevant product development or R&D experience (preferably with implantable hardware)
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Advanced degree preferred
