Job Summary

The Staff Accountant will be responsible for the accurate and timely application of incoming payments to the open accounts receivable, as well as for the accounting for client trust funds. The individual in this role will be a member of the Accounting department and will report to the Finance Director.

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing all incoming payments (Checks, Wires, ACH Payments, Credit Cards) for accuracy and posting these payments in the accounting software
  • Researching any questions that may arise about the application of incoming payments
  • Researching and responding to Attorneys’ requests regarding client payments
  • Monitoring bank activity for any unusual or unexpected transactions
  • Maintaining the accounting records for Pierce Atwood escrow/trust accounts
  • Making deposits and issuing disbursements from the escrow/trust accounts in accordance with firm procedures
  • Providing backup coverage to other department members (billing specialists, trust accountant) during vacations or peak times (training will be provided).
  • Supporting other projects and initiatives within the department as they occur

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Minimum of 5-7 years relevant work experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Thorough understanding of accounting principles and internal controls
  • Experience with journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Ability to consistently exercise discretion and independent judgment
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently with a high degree of accuracy, confidentiality and professionalism
  • Exceptional customer service skills; ability to respond to requests from internal/external customers in a prompt, professional manner
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, professional environment with ever-changing deadlines & priorities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
