This is a technical Senior role that is responsible for the sustained, engineering, maintenance, and tier3 operations of the Identity Management infrastructure utilized by the Enterprise and customers.  The Senior Systems Engineer will be responsible for working with application stakeholders to design and implement solutions related to integrations into said Identity Management systems.  Individual will also be responsible for various aspects of infrastructure management including implementation, maintenance, performance monitoring and capacity planning, troubleshooting, security, support, etc. While this role is primarily technical, this role requires a great deal of communication with users and technical resources at all levels.  The position is responsible for understanding and interpreting global technical and business requirements in order to apply technologies globally. This includes participation in discovery, documentation, validation / refinement of solutions while considering opportunities for re-use of standard solutions and technologies.  Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks principles.  Candidate should have strong communication skills (written and verbal) and be comfortable working with other groups within the organization.

  • Assist the design, testing, support and implementation of the Identity and Access Management Tools and Services. Administration and management of Identity and Access Management Service components and the operational support of these environments.
  • Assess risks and impacts arising from a business disruption and make decisions and determine actions independently and expediently to eliminate those risks and ensure the continuity of the business. 
  • Identify user and system requirements, designs systems, and provides technical direction and standards
  • Perform third level problem root cause analysis on systems taking it to full resolution
  • Partner with key business stakeholders to improve the overall quality of solutions.
  • Design, implement and ensure that systems achieve 100% uptime 24x7x365 operational availability
  • Assist in Capacity Planning and Performance Management of supported services/technologies.
  • Define and maintain appropriate controls and documentation ensuring compliance with regulatory and audit requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute processes and procedures to ensure ongoing Disaster Recovery Readiness.
  • Designs the integration and implementation of various technologies and systems architectures
  • Analyzing, planning, testing, and implementation and maintenance of complex Active Directory architectures in a Global Enterprise environment
  • Responsible for the integrity of the installation and maintenance process as well as for ensuring optimal performance
  • Develop, maintain, and execute processes and procedures to ensure ongoing Disaster Recovery Readiness.
  • Assist in the support of other Identity Management infrastructure services/technologies as necessary.
  • Manages medium to large scale, complex IT projects and applies structured engineering life cycles (Need assessment, design, and implementation) that meet business units overall needs
  • Collaborates closely with Strategy and Architecture, other IT groups, and IT Suppliers to develop technology solutions that are in line with all Starbucks IT standards and guidelines
  • Develops and communicates project design and proposal and obtains approvals from all stakeholders (business units management, group peers, sr management)
  • Participate in developing RFP’s based on requirements, sets up vendor conferences, evaluates bids and recommends the selected services or products to the appropriate management entity.
  • Ensuring that the resulting technology architecture will effectively support implementation of Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Enterprise IT Management (EITM) solutions
  • Meets with vendors to discuss product offerings, addresses technical issues/deficiencies and influences new products and services to meet growing and changing requirements.
  • Participate in on call rotation for support of Production Identity Management infrastructure, coverage 24x7x365.

Product and Standards Development

  • Maintains knowledge of emerging trends in the industry through participation in user groups, and disciplined monitoring of periodicals, research groups (ex. Gartner, Forester)
  • Collaborates with peers during standards / product development. Technical Leadership and Project Management
  • Leads and participates in key technology selection initiaties and major decision frameworking
  • Participates in lab exercises leading to critical path decisions in architecture, troubleshooting, and proof of concepts 
  • Provides technical leadership and guidance to other staff members on medium-to-large scale network related projects including preparation of budgetary input for network hardware, software and services. Communicates project design requirements to Starbucks partners suppliers.
  • Interfaces with senior management for presentations and high priority / high visibility projects.


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Information Systems or comparable experience. 
  • Knowledge of current Cybersecurity technologies and practices and their relationship to IdAM
  • Strong understanding of IdAM in Windows environment 
  • Awareness of multiple authentication techniques
  • Fundamental understanding of identity vs. authentication vs. access control elements and how they work together
  • An understanding of PKI concepts and technologies including asymmetric and symmetric cryptography
  • General understanding of supporting technologies and protocols including Windows administration 
  • Some familiarity of iOS and Android ecosystems to support the credentialing of mobile devices. 
  • Extensive experience in computer programming, particularly C#, VB.Net and Python
  • Technical knowledge of PowerShell and some VB Scripting.
  • Familiarity with UNIX (Solaris and Redhat Linux) a plus. 
  • Demonstrated experience with structured engineering/design life cycle (needs assessment, design, and implementation). 
  • Ability to professionally handle multiple tasks in a pressured environment and ability to prioritize projects and establish schedules for their timely completion.
  • Progressive knowledge/experience managing projects of increasing size and complexity including the utilization of project planning and project dashboard tools. ITIL foundtional experience is desired and considered a plus. 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Experience using diagnostic, monitoring, problem and change management tools 2 years

  • Working in a cross-functional groups to identify complex, enterprise level solutions2 years
  • Advanced understanding of SDLC and Application Architecture2 years
