Your tasks

The Sr. Storage Architect/Engineer provides administration, technical support and engineering for Freudenberg IT’s Storage Environment, which includes NetApp, 3PAR and EMC VMAX storage systems. This position collaborates on and implements architecture recommendations, performs design related to application integration, system administration, problem management, preventive maintenance, and performance tuning, all within best practice standards. Operationally, the Storage Engineer handles daily ticket service request handling and incident management in terms of overall availability/performance and in terms of projects deliverables would include system specifications, implementation plans, documentation, ongoing performance management and capacity planning for the existing devices within the Storage Environment. Additionally, these services are required for a 24x7x365 high availability environment including on-call rotation and off-hour deployments. All Engineers are expected to be versatile in many technology disciplines outside their SME role and contribute to cross functional teams in all aspects of infrastructure design. Preference is given to Engineers with significant public cloud experience such as AWS or Azure.

The Sr. Storage Architect/Engineer will be a part of the Design and Engineering team, which plays a central role within the hosting organization and is comprised of subject matter experts in the technical fields related to FIT’s hosting practice. The team has five major responsibilities:

  • Pre-Sales Engineering for new and existing customers, including requirements gathering, feasibility and gap analysis, and solution development
  • Technical Blueprints, including the specification of landscape, network, server, virtualization, software installation, and procurement details for customer deployment projects
  • Consulting, including conducting research and providing advice on technical aspects of the hosting business to both FIT internal staff and customers
  • FIT internal implementation projects comprised of technical infrastructure changes to our product platforms that benefit multiple customers, bundled with solution and operational deployment documentation to provide to Operational staff
  • 3rd Level Support Escalations, where Design and Engineering solves the toughest technical problems when the infrastructuresupport teams need additional help
  • All Engineers are expected to be versatile in many technology disciplines outside their SME role and contribute to cross functional team on all aspects of infrastructure design

YOUR TASKS

Storage provisioning and maintenance including:

  • Allocating SAN storage to Unix, VMware, and Windows systems via redundant switches with the appropriate zoning and LUN masking
  • Supporting Multi-Client SAN within general guidelines, managing priorities based upon severity, work-flow and time constraints
  • Migrating data between storage frames and storage tiers via host or storage controller-based software
  • Effectively applying problem management procedures towards quick and effective problem resolution, fulfilling all appropriate post-incident documentation in a timely manner
  • Participating in the development of enterprise storage plans & technology standards as well as in requirements gathering and issues development for potential Engineering efforts
  • Generating project schedules in cooperation with Operations, Engineering and Architecture to deliver storage for the enterprise
  • A focus will be on automating operational tasks to improve reliability and adherence to standards in the environment

Storage life cycle management responsibilities including:

  • Ensuring hardware microcode levels are accurate/ up-to-date. Works with the vendor to ensure the timely delivery of microcode reports, and facilitating internal Change Management requirements for this external support staff
  • Deploying quarterly, monthly and as needed hardware and software patches through the internal Change Management process
  • Implementing hardware and software upgrades and patches. Researches “Generally Available” code levels
  • Creating and maintaining documentation as it relates to infrastructure systems, design, configuration, support and processes

Capacity Planning data collection, analysis and planning including:

  • Collecting and reviewing capacity data to ensure the continuous availability of service
  • Analyzing performance statistics at the disk frame and host level to verify disk I/O health and identify any bottlenecks
  • Developing and distributing utilizationreports & performance data, in “user-understandable” formatted reports, to all relevant internal and external parties, which may include customers

Provide level 2 and level 3 operational support, incident management and problem management resolution including:

  • Functioning as a member of the on-call rotation team
  • May be required to work off-shift hours due to project installations or data migrations
  • Adhering to Change Management policies and established enterprise standards
  • Adhering to securityprocesses and policies

Our expectations

  • 6 to 10 years of experience in a mid-to-large, high availability, storage environment
  • Azure, AWS or other public cloud experienced preferred
  • Leading groups and/or project teams strongly preferred
  • Storage Resource Management tools and Disaster Recovery are highly desirable
  • Solid understanding of Managed Hosting Services
  • Proven experienceworking within incident, problem and change management programs and developing maintenance plans related to Storage environments is preferred
  • Highly energetic person who can work independently in addition to being a strong team player
  • Cisco SAN Switches and HP, EMC, NetApp and Disk Subsystems is preferred
  • Demonstratable scripting and automation skills
  • Proven knowledge of storage performance, data replication, SAN based backup, load balancing, storage virtualization methods and SAN zoning/provisioning is desirable
  • Virtualization experience, preferably Vmware
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment including the ability to pull disparate groups together to align on a solution and create cross-functional partnership
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to articulate highly technical user needs in a concise manner easily understood by all levels of the organization
  • Manage and/or be involved in multiple projects at the same time and deliver quality service
  • Expert organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects and objectives in a rapidly changing environment
  • Excellent customer service skills including responding to user needs in a prompt, courteous manner
  • Level 2 to level 3 expertise of current SAN environment with experiencetroubleshooting the most complex problems and escalations from identification through resolution
  • “Big Picture” thinking - the ability to see how parts interact with the whole
  • High level of flexibility and ability to focus through periods of significant change and challenge in the business environment
