Job Description

The Sr. Staff AQE - Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for defining and implementing quality in database solutions for multiple applications and platforms.  The Sr. Staff AQE will be responsible for relational and multi-dimensional data modeling, database schema creation and maintenance, database deployments and releases, data migrations, database monitoring and troubleshooting, production support, backup and recovery and performance optimizations.  This includes analyzing requirements and leading high level logical data modeling, performing physical data modeling, and contributing to overall data store and data flow solution architecture. The AQE will also be responsible for driving better data quality metrics, testing and data governance processes to deliver controls in processes. Detailed responsibilities include:

  • Lead and complete all data modeling activities including tracking and status reporting of all assigned tasks for the DBA team.
  • Provide technical oversight to developers, analysts and data consumers on use of databases and data models including creating and maintaining database standards and procedures for best practices for our database projects environments.
  • Provide software developers with flexible data models which can be easily utilized and extended.
  • Perform activities and provides technical oversight and mentoring in areas such as data governance, data modeling, Master Data Management, metadata management and database / query performance and optimization.
  • Participate in the design, development and implementation of scalable, flexible and extensible solutions following the scrum/agile development practices.
  • Review and approve data model / database changes, releases database change sets to environments.
  • Create and maintain CI/CD (Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery) processes and solutions for deploying database releases / change through all environments from development through production.
  • Manage DevOps and sustainment processes and procedures for databases including monitoring and optimizing database performance, capacity planning, alerting, and on callsupport of production systems.
  • Document SLAs, data quality metrics for solutions build.
  • Assist in databasesecurityarchitecture, access administration and auditing.
  • Define and maintain processes established for DB related activities including data governance and disaster recovery planning.

Minimum Education, Experience & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent required.
  • 10+years of Database Administrationexperience implementing and maintainingdatabasesolutions on various platforms and with various technologies including:
    • Microsoft database technologies including SQL Server 2008 – 2016, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS.
    • Cloud database platforms such as Azure SQL DB, SQL DW, Amazon RDS, or Redshift.
    • BI specific MPP database platforms such as Redshift, Teradata, Vertica, PDW, or SQL DW.
    • Column store database technologies such as Vertica or SQL DW – understanding of columstore vs. rowstore performance and compression characteristics and when to choose either technology.
    • Database release management and automation including database CI/CD in a cloud environment.
  • Experience with data modeling (logical and physical) andarchitecturefor different types of solutions including:
    • OLTP (transactional) applications data modeling using 3rd Normal Form modeling techniques.
    • BI / OLAP solution data modeling using dimensional (star/snowflake schema) modeling techniques.
    • Big Data solutions using MPP and partitioning technologies to support high Volume, Velocity, and Variety of data.
  • Experience with database performance monitoring and capacity planning.
  • Experience implementing, optimizing, and maintaining production databases and queries.
  • Understanding of basic high-level performance monitoring metrics (CPU, Storage, concurrency, locking, etc.) regardless of the data store technology.
  • Understanding of Azure SQL Querystore and SQL Performance Analytics or other 3rd party tools to monitor database performance.
  • Capable of communicating performance findings to developers and offering recommendations to improve future performance.
  • Capable of monitoring current storage requirements and estimating future requirements based on current and estimated future workloads.
  • Experience with compliance processes.
  • Experience working in the healthcare or other regulated industry following software standards such as IEC 62304 or ITIL standards.
  • Experience with data privacy laws and other industry compliance standards such as HIPPA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships
  • Experience with ERP, manufacturing and healthcare industries / data domains
  • Experience with Data Governance, Master Data Management and metadata management
  • Experience with database testing including designing and building automated testing solutions to support CI/CD
  • Experience with NoSQL, schema-less, and document (JSON) storage technologies such as CosmosDB, MongoDB, etc.
