Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

In the near term, the Polymer Scientists role will be to work with the project team to ensure the chemistry in a continuous reactor system is running smoothly over an extended period of time.  Responsibilities include:

  • Design and synthesis green polymers to performance specifications based on a fundamental understanding of polymer structure/property relationship and building on the Novomer green chemistry platform.
  • Collaborate on projects to develop polymerization processes, identify any impurities building up over time, determine the root cause of chemistry-related issues that arise, and clearly communicate results to the team.
  • Partner with external consultants, vendors, and other team members in developing the technology, to scale-up catalyst components, and analyze process streams.
  • Ability to lead technical efforts to troubleshoot issues that may arise in process development and scale-up.
  • Ability to investigate a problem, formulate plan to find a solution, and execute on appropriate time schedule.
  • Actively participates and contributes to solving problems and to making or reaching decisions.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Technical Qualifications & Skills

  • Design and synthesis of polyols, otherpolymer intermediates, and polymers.
  • Optimization of polymer structure and functionality
  • Excellent level of analytical and research skills.  Experience developing robust analytical methods and implementing sampling and measuring protocols to characterize polymers and evaluate reaction results.
  • Strong understanding of chemical process hazards.
  • Ability to lead technical efforts to troubleshoot issues that may arise in process development and scale-up.  Ability to investigate a problem, formulate plan to find a solution, and execute on appropriate time schedule.
  • In depth knowledge of polymer structure-property relations, effects of polymer microstructure on thermal, mechanical and rheological properties and demonstrated capability to modify polymer structure to achieve end performance
  • Knowledge of ionic polymerization and production processes
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Education,  Work Experience, and Personal Attributes

  • MS or PhD in Polymer Chemistry, material science or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial research experience
  • Hands-on experience scaling up new chemical process technologies from bench top to commercial scale production.
  • Exposure to Project Management and Stage Gate Methodologies
  • Detail-oriented, methodical and well-organized approach, while possessing a sense of urgency, and acting with the highest level of integrity at all times.
  • Must possess the ability to be a team player who strives to develop and build positive and constructive working relationships, and demonstrates sound and mature judgment in interpersonal communications and work relationships across multiple functional teams
