Position Summary:

The selected candidate will report into the Illumina Life Cycle Management team and support the Operations organization in the areas of manufacturing transfer, design for reliability, design for manufacturability, design for serviceability, and trouble-shooting of new products. The role will provide strong optical engineering expertise spanning multiple phases of product development. The role will coordinate and collaborate with many Illumina teams including development, systems integration, software, manufacturing, customer support, and quality within each project. And, the role will partner with critical external suppliers to manage external development and manufacturing activities. The engineer needs to be a self-starter, analytically oriented, and able to identify/deliver results in a dynamic environment with aggressive timelines.


· Support manufacturing transfer of innovative, robust, low cost, and miniaturized optical designs within Illumina’s instrumentation portfolio

· Support the optical design team via participation in design reviews, DFx, FMEA, modeling, and tolerance budgeting

· Partner with world-wide Contract Manufacturer & Original Design Manufacturer (CM/ODM) partners throughout the new product transfer and early production phase to achieve manufacturing readiness. This includes in-depth operational readiness assessments and active support of partner in achieving readiness

· Support development of supplier manufacturing processes and testing to maximize capacity and yield of subassemblies delivered to Illumina

· Support development of incoming, in-line, and end-of-line sub-assembly/instrument tests to ensure optical performance targets are met

· Support prototype, pilot, manufacturing, and products in the field by working cross functionally with consumables, hardware and systems integration teams to conduct system level optical troubleshooting, testing, and analysis

· Participate in CPM (critical parameter management) analysis to relate optical system specifications to sequencing performance, while considering system level interactions with chemistry & hardware

· Support protocol generation and execution for validating our optical systems and manufacturing processes

· Design and execute experiments to confirm models and further characterize our instruments

· Interface with PLM to create and maintain bill of materials and documentation to enable successful build of prototype, pilot, and production hardware


· Demonstrated technical competency in optical systems design, optical systems NPI, or optics-related Manufacturing Engineering in an NPI environment is required

· Experience exercising Root Cause Analysis techniques in a dynamic team environment to determine the cause of complex issues is required (8D, KT, etc…)

· Experience in low to medium volume, high-complexity product NPI is strongly preferred

· Experience interfacing with suppliers/partners to manage deliverables and support issue resolution is required

· Demonstrated ability to concept and implement measurement systems and metrology tools to measure the important characteristics of an optical system is strongly preferred

· Demonstrated competency operating within a controlled product lifecycle system is required, experience with SAP is a plus

· Experience working in a regulated environment is required, experienceworking withmedical devices is strongly preferred

· Experience designing and executing DOE’s for parameter screening and optimization is preferred

· Familiarity with the process of establishing and confirming spec levels for high-yield manufacturing is required, demonstrated success is preferred

· Familiarity with risk analysis and mitigation tools is required

· Familiarity with high resolution fluorescence microscopy is preferred

· Familiarity with various light sources including DPSS, diode lasers, and LEDs is preferred

· Familiarity with various optical sensors including CCDs and CMOS is preferred

· Experience modeling and analyzing optical systems using Zemax or COMSOL is preferred

· Experience using Solidworks is a plus

· Formal training in Six Sigma or Critical Parameter Management is preferred

· Demonstrated ability to succeed on multiple concurrent projects in a complex, dynamic, sometime ambiguous environment is required

· Ability to collect, prepare, and present information tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences is required

· Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills are required

· International and domestic travel of up to 20% is required


· Bachelors or Masters in Optical Engineering or Related Field and 5 years of experience, or

· Ph.D in Optical Engineering or Related Field
