The Sr. Network and Systems Administrator serves a critical role within Information Management’s System Architecture unit in ensuring that our infrastructure and systems support the growing demands of Advancement’s applications and needs.
The Sr. Network and Systems Administrator recommends networked server and related technology solutions and methods in support of the University of Washington’s complex and multifunctional University Advancement programs and activities. These solutions and methods include public and private server hosting solutions and configurations, data storage technology, backup and recovery readiness, network, server and end user security measures, and policies concerning the above.
He or she is primarily responsible for providing expert technical support as well as mentors other support staff in the areas of networked servers and solutions; assisting in the development of information vehicles and providing client advocacy and consultation with Advancement staff in the use of departmental technical resources; providing domain-based technical support and troubleshooting for University Advancement and responding to hardware/software problems with technical corrective procedures.
This is a master-level position that requires the ability to architect, analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve network and system administration issues in a complex, multi-functional hybrid environment including private infrastructure & public cloud based infrastructure, and provide professional development and mentoring consultation within the unit in order to develop increasingly high levels of competence and excellent service delivery.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under minimal supervision, design the operations of our server infrastructure for private and public cloud, local area networks including backups, disaster recovery and business continuity. Analyze technology systems infrastructure and methods; serve as the vendor relations manager for hosted & managed server support. Lead the activities of the Network and Systems Administrator regarding installation of physical and virtual servers and various software packages. Manage and harmonize user accounts, security policies, server and workstation configurations, and write technical documentation.
Install, maintain and monitor physical and virtual servers that are all run on Windows server operating systems. Resolve performance and security issues as necessary; install upgrades and patches to network operating software as required; install and maintain a reliable backup solution for departmental files and servers; Evaluate, approve and oversee maintenance of system disaster recovery and business continuity plans and procedures; periodically test reliability of procedures; monitor and perform virus and vulnerability scanning on network servers. Use diagnostic tools and troubleshooting processes to determine if problems are due to equipment, network or application errors, resolve connectivity issues.
Track server software license compliance along with technology documents/certificates such as product registrations, SSL certificates, maintenance agreements, service contracts; recommend departmental hardware and software standards. Advise leadership of discovery and mitigation of IT security risks.
The Sr. Network and Systems Administrator is responsible for Advancement’s technology infrastructure operations. He or She provides secure, compliant, robust, reliable, scalable and efficient infrastructure and will consult with and advise the Associate Director, System Architecture with the oversight of day to day support of all production platforms to ensure availability, integrity, and confidentiality of the network, servers, telecommunications services and information. Technology design, architecture, implementation, research, technical infrastructure lifecycle are within the scope of this position. May include project management of other support staff and vendors.
Create security layer through design and verification of security measures, logical firewall, virus scanning, vulnerability scanning, and application communication layer improvements.
Utilize databases for management and maintain records on hardware and software configurations, network performance and configurations. Perform research and provide high level documentation to management regarding new technology and equipment.
Act as lead vendor relations and tracking staff for outsourced services and purchasing relationships; serve as third tier support for complex desktop, printing or server technical issues, consulting with front line support staff in delivering solutions.

o Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
o Minimum of five years related field work which includes Windows Server OS, Windows Virtual Server technology, SQL Server, Windows desktop OS, as well as LAN and WAN design and architecture.
o Strong competencies in managing and working in private and public cloud infrastructure (Azure preferred), good working knowledge of server virtualization software, and best practices.
o Expert in troubleshooting hardware and software problems at the component level.
o Strong working knowledge of security best practices for networks and systems.
