Task & Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative designs to meet all requirements for performance, reliability, total cost of ownership, serviceability, and manufacturability
  • Lead design visualization efforts with 3D CAD models to explore multiple design options
  • Realize industrial design concept sketches in to functional and manufacturable designs
  • Design of plastic and metal mechanical components, mechanisms, and assemblies
  • Design of user interface and electrical enclosures
  • Detailed mechanical design using CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo/Pro-E, etc.)
  • Create engineering package including BOM, assembly trees, parts list, etc.
  • Release and control engineering documentation using ECO processes
  • Leverage laboratory testing and field-test data to understand and manage design trade-offs
  • Hold mechanical technical design reviews, risk assessments, FMEA, FEA, Reliability testing, etc.
  • Define qualification, acceptance, and functional testing requirements for mechanical systems
  • Design and specify motors and actuators, perform analysis of electromechanical systems
  • Lead Failure Analysis Reports, Root-cause analyses, and Manufacturing readiness reviews
  • Design and document Cable harnesses
  • Release parts and utilize ECO process in Electronic PLM System
  • Perform basic thermal analysis and tolerance stack-up studies
  • Provide work and design direction for external design consultants and companies
  • Interface with domestic and international suppliers and contract manufacturers to procure and fabricate mechanical components
  • Compose specifications for Mechanical subsystems for use internally or by external Engineering Firms
  • Document design choices and calculation efforts
  • Mentor and Guide Junior Engineers
  • Develop processes and procedures for the Mechanical Engineering Team

What you need

  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent field
  • 6+ years of experience in Mechanical Design
  • Mechanical design and product development activities from concept through production
  • Ability to take design ownership across the full product development process from conceptual design through production
  • Experience designing with different plastic forming processes like rotational molding, injection molding, extrusions, vacuum forming, and thermoforming
  • Experience designing with different metal fabrications processes like sheet metal forming, machining, extrusions, castings, and weldments
  • Mastery of CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience guiding the work of others and directly supporting third party vendors

Things that make a difference

  • Experience with various thermal, shock, vibration, and ingress protection techniques and able to apply them to electronics modules and enclosure packaging
  • Mastery of GD&T standards
  • Vehicle level design integration experience
  • Knowledge of the mechanical design of electronics PCB, module packaging and cabling
  • Familiar working with various agency standards like IEC, UL, ETL, CE, ANSI, MIL and NEMA, etc.
  • Experience in mobile robotics or industrial automation.
