Sr Manager, External Communications - Corporate

The role

We are currently seeking a Senior Manager of Cross-Business External Communications, Americas to drive strategic and external communications and PR initiatives across the Americas business. Areas of focus will include brand, technology, and theme-programs. Location of this position is any major US city, with Chicago preferred.

We’re seeking a forward-thinking communicator to oversee creation and implementation of external communication plans and programs encompassing both traditional and digital media and publications, external speaking engagements and outreach, executive communications, and our corporate presence on social media. This person will help to differentiate JLL, promote the brand and tell the story of JLL as the best professional services firm specializing in real estate, the employer of choice in the industry - and raise external awareness of the company and its client work. Additionally, this individual will help position JLL as the best technology company in real estate. 

The successful candidate will develop and lead communications programs that:

  • Advance JLL’s brand positioning with our current and potential clients, influencers in our industry, and with potential JLL employees
  • Exemplify how we are focusing on technology to transform the commercial real estate experience for our clients
  • Align JLL leaders’ external conversation with growth priorities and client needs

This position reports to the Director of External Communications, Americas.


External Communications Leadership

  • Establish and implement a communication strategy that supports JLL’s brand positioning around technology and key initiatives that cross the JLL Americas business
  • Develop and advise JLL Americas leaders on program messaging, priorities, and business narrative
  • Lead executive communications programs and initiatives, properly positioning members of leadership, aligning messaging, and coordinating communications and internal touch points
  • Identify creative and innovative ways to convey the JLL story, both through our executives and key leaders within the business and in collaboration with clients
  • Identify and develop a bench of spokespersons in key topic areas who can speak on behalf of the JLL brand and help shape and promote thought leadership / external content in those topic areas
  • Incorporate analytics and metrics in planning and evaluation of external communications activities, taking a data-driven approach to communications efforts and counsel
  • Guide content development, proactive media relations, conference participation, speaking opportunities, earned media, social media, media events, and securing of awards and recognition
  • Support reactive media relations as needed, including crisis and reputation management
  • Develop deep understanding of commercial real estate industry and JLL’s businesses, capabilities, clients and results

Relationship Management

  • Develop relationships and provide strategic communications counsel, acting as a trusted advisor to key contacts at all levels of JLL’s business
  • Manage productive relationships with internal partners to the business (such as marketing, research, internal communications, brand, digital, etc.) at regional, national, and global levels
  • Develop relationships and lead programs with leaders across the JLL business, advising and collaborating with them as appropriate

Team and Program Management

  • Design measurement practices, leveraging analytics to drive strategic plans, content decisions, to communicate results, and to recommend improvements to communications practices
  • Help source, select, and manage PR firms and external contractors
  • Responsible for management of program budget and operations; may be responsible for  management, training and development, and work flow for small team of communications professionals

Candidate profile

With 10+ years overall experience, this individual will be a proven B2B communications leader and strategic thinker.  Key competencies required for the position include:

  • Demonstrated understanding of how communications can be used to position a brand and support revenue generation, growth, and recruiting activities
  • Deep, hands-on experience in strategic communications, including messaging and issues/change management
  • Experience building, securing buy-in, and launching new programs
  • Proven ability to cultivate relationships with and advise leadership-level stakeholders, with appropriate level of confidentiality when required
  • Expertise in influencing business strategies and aligning communications with commercial objectives
  • Broad business acumen plus significant knowledge of disruptive technologies and their relationship to business; experience with companies whose businesses involve the financial markets and/or commercial real estate a plus
  • Experience working with tech media and/or tech-oriented business media
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, initiative, creativity
  • Experience working in heavily matrixed environments, leading by influence, and managing change
  • Experience leading and achieving results in a collaborative work environment
  • Experience using research and industry insights and best practices to drive strategies and tactics
  • Current on trends in brand journalism, content development/management,social media outreach, executive communications, self-publishingchannels, and communications measurement approaches
