Practical Law is looking for an experienced labor and employment attorney with a focus on international employment law to join our Employment Service. This role can be located out of a home office anywhere in the United States if the candidate does not live near a Thomson Reuters office. Candidates outside the United States may be considered as well. The Editor will:
- Develop, write and edit Practical Law Global know-how and current awareness resources (including practice guidance notes, standard documents, checklists and legal updates) for practicing attorney-subscribers primarily in the area of employment law and, optimally, also in the following topic areas:
- Creating and enforcing global policies and procedures for companies
- Employment agreements
- International secondments and other temporary assignments abroad
- Pay and benefits
- Immigration issues related to permanent and temporary employee moves abroad
- Employment in corporate transactions, particularly cross-border M&A
- Restrictive covenants, confidentiality and IP in employment context
- Discrimination, human rights and whistleblowing
- Managing working relationships in multinational companies (performance management, employee data and monitoring, grievances, sickness/incapacity, time off, leaves)
- Help set the strategic direction and drive the content plan for Practical Law Global resources to meet the practice needs of lawyers working on international/cross-border transactions.
- Audit existing content offerings to ensure consistency and strategic content development in support of business goals.
- Collaborate with other Practical Law Employment editors (in the US, UK, Canada and Australia), editors from Practical Law’s Global/Cross-border Team, Practical Law’s Law Department Team and other Practical Law services on Global content planning and priorities, resource production and peer review.
- Establish and maintain relationships with external law firm contributors across the world.
- Develop relationships with international lawyers in private practice and in-house counsel and industry groups internationally to ensure that the content is topical and meets their needs.
- Organize and conduct webinars on cross-border transactions and other Global topics.
Candidates should have at least the following skills and experience:
- At least eight (8) years’ experience working as an employment lawyer at a law firm and/or as in-house counsel with in-depth international/cross-border work experience. In-house employment law experience at a multinational company ideal.
- Significant and broad expertise and practice experience in a variety of international employment matters, with a focus on matters of importance for multinational companies and, optimally, also covering:
- global policies and procedures for companies;
- employment agreements;
- international secondments and other temporary assignments abroad;
- pay and benefits;
- immigration issues related to permanent and temporary employee moves abroad;
- employment in corporate transactions, particularly cross-border M&A;
- restrictive covenants, confidentiality and IP in employment context;
- discrimination, human rights and whistleblowing;
- unions; and
- managing working relationships in multinational companies (performance management, employee data and monitoring, grievances, sickness/incapacity, time off, leaves).
- A good understanding of the needs and priorities of both law firm attorneys and in-house counsel.
- Licensed to practice law in one or more of the following jurisdictions is preferred: CA, DC, IL, MI, MN, NY, TX, WA.
- Enthusiasm and ambition, with a desire to improve the efficiency of legal services.
- A passion for writing and strong editing skills, including:
- very close attention to detail;
- excellent command of grammar, punctuation and plain English;
- strong technical drafting skills; and
- the ability to write about complex legal issues clearly and simply.
- Self-motivated with excellent management and organizational skills to effectively track productivity and ensure product development milestones are met.
- Ability to constantly collaborate with and support team members.
- Ability to network effectively with lawyers from multiple international jurisdictions at conferences and in other settings, and to solicit contributions and expertise from them.
Candidates selected for a second interview will be required to undertake writing and editing samples.
