  1. Responsible for the Accounting function of MP&W including, but not limited to:

    1. Oversee and support the operating budget and projections activities, including all analysis and reporting.

    2. Research, compile, and analyze financial data to advise/support business decisions, including revenue and expenditure trends, financial commitments, and future revenues.

    3. Compile, prepare, and analyze financial information to prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financialreports and variance analysis.Ensure all deadlines are met.

    4. Analyze financial information to recommend or develop efficient uses of resources and procedures, provide strategic recommendations and maintain solutions to business and financial problems.

    5. Oversee audit workpapers and MD&A preparation.

    6. Assist in Annual Report preparation.

    7. Assist in cash flow analysis and cash investment recommendations.Monitor and record investment activities.

    8. Compile and submit reports with regulatory or non-regulatory agencies as assigned.

  2. Supervise the activities of Accounting personnel, including the following:

    1. Make recommendations for hiring, promotion, evaluation, discharge, or other disciplinary action.

    2. Train employees on MP&W policies and procedures and ensure employees understand thoroughly.

    3. Provide guidance to staff regarding work procedures, technical issues, work priorities, and special requests.

    4. Assess, actively develop, and set goals with employees to assist in their preparation for future growth within the Utility.

    5. Develop/maintain a culture of safety within the department.Support the Utility’s safety programs, ensure adequate training, and provide safe working conditions and practices.

    6. Develop/maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the department.Utilize lean principles and other continuous improvement tools in an effort to maximize the efficiency of the department.

    7. Ensure quality customer service is provided and that work is completed accurately, thoroughly, safely, timely, and that employees are as productive as possible.

Other Responsibilities

  1. Support efforts of the Communications Utility strategic planning group by providing financial analysis of projects and proposed plans.

  2. Provide accounting software training as needed.

  3. Ensure all debt compliance obligations are met.

  4. Other duties as assigned.

 Position Requirements



  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivelant combination of education and experiencerequired.

  2. Minimum 5 years accounting experience with progressive responsibility; utility, government or public accounting experiencepreferred.

  3. Knowledge of GAAP regulations required. Knowledge of FERC and GASB helpful.

  4. Knowledge of GAAS and internal controls required.

  5. Knowledge of Iowa and Illinois salestaxlawpreferred.

  2. Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere.

  3. Proficiency with use of Microsoft Office Word at an intermediate level and Excel at an advanced level; proficiency with a computerized accounting and/or payroll system desired.
