The Sr. Director, User Experience is responsible for leading the UX strategy and design to enhance the experience of the Optum digital product consumer. In addition, the role is responsible for leading a team of 4 - 10 UX designers and developers driving cross - channel consistency, whenever possible.


Reports to the Vice President of Experience Design.  Works closely with information architects, interaction designers, user experience engineers, product managers, development teams, strategists, operations, project coordinators, UHG IT, Enterprise Security, business owners and outside vendors.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Define the user experience of our digital products and online applications by developing user interface wireframes, prototypes, page flow / task flow designs, navigation and information architecture that engage and delight the end user
  • Collaborate with user researchers to validate and test you and your team’s ideas
  • Work with  product managers and engineers to deliver compelling designs to market that satisfy user goals and enhance our product set
  • Evangelize the role of user experience design across the company
  • Make user experience design recommendations based on usability standards and industry best practices
  • Contribute to the corporate UX design standards and framework
  • Lead ongoing management, evolution and governance of our design pattern library
  • Mentor junior team members on interaction design principles and processes
  • Coach a developerresponsible for coding our design pattern library
  • Defines and manages teams deliverables, timelines, estimates / budgets and contractor needs to ensure projects fulfill time / scope / budget parameters
  • Procure and use data, including KPIs, market research, and testing methods, to identify ways to conceptualize and advance the user experience
  • Successfully present your designs to a cross functional product team to elicit constructive feedback and actively participate in others’ design reviews
  • Lead teams in strategic definition, scoping, UX design,  documenting and testing of mobile and web solutions and associated systems in support of Optum’s digitalexperiences
  • Perform UX role for your own projects, as well as create prototypes with internal and external partners to advocate and evangelize the future consumer experience
  • Work across the organization with Digital Product Managers, Accessibility team, Front End Development, Content / Copy and Product P&L owners
  • Drive development and communication of requirements specifications, tracking, escalation if needed
  • Research and educate self and Experience Design team on new consumer  technologies and experience trends as needed
  • May lead a team of 4 - 10 User Experience team members


Required Qualifications:

  • 10 + years of experience designing and leading the design of user interfaces for web / mobile app, following user - centered design principles
  • 6+ years leading digital design teams
  • Portfolio

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in computer science (or equivalent  experience)
  • Undergraduate degree in Human - Computer Interaction or related field, graduate degree
  • Portfolio of past UX / IA projects including task flows, site maps, affinity maps, wireframes, etc.
  • 5+ years of experience defining UX / IA strategy and frameworks across a variety of platforms
  • 4+ years successfully working in a large matrixed organization
  • Significant experience providing critical analysis of user experience designs based on heuristics and other accepted design principles
  • iOS and Android experience
  • Experience developing and institutionalizing  UX / UI standards  in large complex ecosystems
  • Ability to seamlessly alternate between dealing with highly technical teams and non - technical business teams
  • Experience developing prototypes and participating in innovation exercises
  • Experience with group facilitation, user interviews, heuristic evaluations, task analysis, usability test design and moderation, and card sorting
  • Knowledge and practical application of accessibility factors, per ADA, Section 508 requirements and W3C WAI guidelines – we design for WCAG 2.0 AA
  • Proficiency with design tools, such as Axure, Visio, Sketch, Invision and Photoshop
  • Experience working with Agile methodology and designing for Mobile and / or Responsive Web
  • Knowledge of CSS, HTML, and Javascript
  • Knowledge of developing frameworks with content management systems in mind
  • Knowledge of video, motion graphics, photography
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to sell ideas with strong negotiation skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team and internal clients within a complex matrixed structure
  • Ability to balance of user - centered design skills, visual design sensibilities, understanding of technical constraints in design thinking
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage time effectively in a highly ambiguous environment
  • Experience directing and holding third party partners accountable for User Experience deliverables
  • Strong skills in the following areas: organizational savvy, ability to handle multiple programs, attention to detail, strong communication skills, high accountability
