Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Nursing for Oncology collaborates with the JHHS Medical Directors, CNOs and the Sr. VP of Nursing for the Johns Hopkins Health System in the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing strategic plans, objectives, and standards at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in all Health System-wide Oncology services areas. The Senior Director leads, manages, and evaluates systems and processes that support oncology nursing and allied health clinical practices. In addition, the Sr. Director of Nursing for Oncology will provide consultation and oversight for new programs within the Johns Hopkins Health System.

The Sr. Director leads and manages clinical operations and initiatives of the oncology patient care delivery system to achieve established productivity, quality, safety, and satisfaction performance parameters.

Accountable for the development and monitoring of the functional unit nursing budgets in Oncology. Assures cost-effective use of resources.

Reporting Relationship:

Reports Directly to Chief Nursing officer of Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Education & Experience:

  1. Master's degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  2. Doctorate highly preferred
  3. Seven (7) years of progressively responsible senior nursing leadership experience with at least 5 years in oncology nursing.
  4. In-depth knowledge of oncology nursing competencies, the scope of practice and professional practice.
  5. Experience in an NCI designated hospital highly desirable.
  6. Experience working on a Magnet journey or in a Magnet hospital highly desirable.
  7. Experience leading large complex projects.
  8. Active listener and able to synthesize the information from multiple stakeholders quickly.
  9. Good communication skills, engaging, passionate about healthcare.
  10. Experience with strategic planning and execution

Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Maryland or able to obtain

Roles & Responsibilities

  1. Ensures functional integration and standardization of oncology care services with other programs across the Health System.
  2. Seeks opportunities to integrate oncology care activities across Johns Hopkins Medicine.
  3. Assists in managing inter-entity barriers to care delivery.
  4. Serves as a liaison among faculty practice office staff, department-based clinicians, and oncology area staff to ensure effective patient care across the continuum.
  5. Provides leadership and direction for the goals of the oncology nursing quality committees.
  6. Ensures systems and competencies are in place to allow the Faculty Practice to successfully participate in government pay-for-performance programs.
  7. Ensures care delivery models are patient-centered, cost-effective and evidence-based.
  8. Develops and directs efficient and effective patient flow systems
  9. Explores innovative approaches to clinical care models that maximize existing resources, strengthen partnerships, and support growth or expansion into new markets and product lines.
  10. Promotes participation in relevant research and uses research results to improve care delivery and clinical practice.
  11. Serves as the primary owner of the electronic health record to ensure optimal use within the oncology services clinical environment
  12. Ensures a state of continual regulatory readiness.
  13. Develops, reviews, and revises clinical standards of practice and ensures compliance with all licensure, credentialing, and scope of practice requirements.
  14. Establishes programs that are consistent with regulatory, institutional, professional, and accreditation standards
  15. Identifies opportunities to positively influence inpatient quality outcomes through integrated outpatient programs and services
  16. Monitors trends in adverse events and near misses; identifies potential risks in processes, procedures and devices; and effectively intervenes or communicates the same to appropriate management authority.
