Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) was formed in 2014 to provide faculty with the space, funding, resources to maximize the impact of research through translation; this division of the university was also designed as a “front door” to industry and investor partners seeking to participate in this work. JHTV has three teams that work closely together toward this goal.
The Technology Transfer group partners with inventors from across the university to translate academic discovery into products and services that benefit society. We are here to:
- Evaluate promising technologies reported by faculty, staff and students.
- Protect the technology with patent, trademark or copyright filings.
- Market them to industry with the hope of finding one or more investors or companies interested in developing products based on the technology.
- Negotiate license agreements with the interested parties.
- Maintain relationships with the companies developing products based on the licensed technology.
- Support and advise faculty in determining the optimal commercialization path
The FastForward team supports campus entrepreneurship via a coordinated suite of resources designed to efficiently move technologies from startup to marketplace. This includes the operation of 43,000 square feet of innovation space, educational programming including bi-annual NSF I-Corps cohorts, access to venture and nondilutive funding, and mentorship by industry veterans.
The Corporate Partnership group is the university’s front door for corporate partners seeking academic collaboration. We specialize in facilitating industry collaborations that translate the novel work of Johns Hopkins researchers into real-world applications. We strive for collaborative, high-impact, efficient partnerships. From initial discussions and framing deal terms to final execution and alliance management, we streamline the establishment, implementation and ongoing management of collaborations. JHTV’s collaborations advance Johns Hopkins’ areas of excellence and provide research pathways with the potential to dramatically impact society.

The Senior Director, Corporate Partnerships is the corporate business development lead for university research partnerships. The Senior Director will grow Johns Hopkins’ portfolio of corporate research collaborations and will lead complex, large-scale university initiatives to optimize industry-academia collaboration. The Senior Director reports to the Senior Advisor to the President and has a leadership role within Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV). The Senior Director supervises a team of business development professionals responsible for cultivating industry partnerships to support commercialization of Hopkins research and to bring increased revenue to the University through sponsored research and licensing opportunities for faculty. The Senior Director sits on several internal and external committees and advisory boards whose goals are to develop best practices for the way Hopkins does business with outside parties and to increase communication between teams engaged in these efforts.
Essential Job Functions:
- Oversees the management and growth of the university’s portfolio of corporate research collaborations:
- Develops business development strategy to secure research partnerships across Hopkins’ areas of research excellence
- Through conferences, networking, direct meetings with university leadership, corporate visits to campus, and other outreach strategies, build relationships with potential industry partners
- Develops and maintains knowledge of university research and further cultivates faculty and administrative relationships across the entity in order to identify appropriate research opportunities and partnerships
- Hosts and manages all industry visits to JHTV by companies, foundations and others interested in working with Hopkins faculty; this includes careful analysis and engagement of faculty teams, briefing of University leadership, and other internal and external partners to foster these opportunities into large scale, long-term collaborations
- Oversees the execution of partnership agreements through coordination with other university entities such as ORA, JHURA, ICTR, etc.
- Provides direction to and manages the JHTV Corporate Partnership team of approximately 10 professionals by establishing program goals, metrics, policies and procedures; provides operational guidance and performance feedback to team members with an emphasis on supporting initiatives to accomplish departmental objectives
- Oversees alliance management of existing collaborations:
- Ensures that large collaborations are staffed with appropriate alliance management resources; manages alliance managers to maximize the effectiveness of each collaboration and the overall university relationship
- Ensures a robust pipeline of investible research projects are presented to corporate partners
- Seeks to expand partnerships within existing partners and additional relationships
- Manages special university-wide projects that involve industry partners examples being the precision medicine initiative, cell therapy manufacturing center, and efforts to bring more discoveries into clinical trials.
- Leads the University-wide Commercial Advisory Group, which recommends policies and procedures for improving industry outreach and collaborations.
- Serves as an active member of the senior leadership team for JHTV, which develops policies and procedures for managing and improving the office.
- Represents the University on various external boards and committees at national and international meetings taking a leadership role on planning committees and participating on industry-focused panels to discuss Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures initiatives.
Scope of Responsibility:
- Manages and mentors a group of approximately 10 professionals to support the mission of JHTV. Works under the direct supervision of the Senior Advisor to the President and with senior leadership across the university, including the President and the Deans of the Schools of Medicine and Engineering.
- On a regular and continuous basis, exercises administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs and/or quality of service within the functional area. Makes recommendations but not the final decision concerning policies related to commercial development.
- Diplomatic skill and expertise in managing confidential and sensitive information
- Demonstrated leadership/managerial skills in a fast-paced, high-profile business development environment
- Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, communication, problem solving and analytical skills
- Able to multi-task under deadline pressure
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- PhD highly preferred.
- 10+ years of business development experience, preferably in the pharma or biotechnology/Life Science industries; deal sheet demonstrating experience and specific roles.
- In-depth knowledge of the commercial drug R&D process including regulatory, reimbursement and structural dynamics.
- Direct experience with gene therapy, cellular therapy and antibody development would be preferred
