Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): • Technical leader and expert in the area of glass forming and heat treatment, including thin sheet rolling, 3D Gorilla glass reforming, glass ceramics 3D forming, large size 3D forming, and ceram process development. • Provide fundamental understanding of thermal, glass viscosity and other process requirements to develop optimized process and transfer to engineering/manufacturing. • Use modeling and critical experiment to define key process parameters to control and to help develop manufacturing equipment specification working jointly with engineering team. • Support manufacturing process scale up, troubleshooting and manufacturing equipment improvements.
Day to Day Responsibilities: • Use first principle knowledge to design and improve glass and glass ceramic thermal processes, equipment and tooling. • Conduct experiment design, trials and data analysis on development and manufacturing glass forming and heat treatment equipment • Identify and propose methods to analyze key product attributes and defect, and drive process development for product optimization and to minimize variability. • Propose critical experiments and modeling required to optimize new process, or troubleshoot existing process and equipment, or to enable meeting target product specifications with high yields. • Deliver documentation and IP as needed.
Travel Requirements (please note if international): • 10-20% international and domestic travel
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: • 40 hours per week/flex time
Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration) • Ph.D. or M.S. in Materials, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering fields (Ph.D. Preferred)
Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess) • Fundamentals and modeling experience in heat transfer and/or fluid flow modeling • Fundamental understanding of structure/property relationships in materials. • Effective communication skills and ability to work in a highly matrixed and diverse organization across research, development, engineering and manufacturing.
Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess) • Experience and knowledge of hot glass forming and glass ceramics • Experience in visco-elastic modeling
