Overview

Provides legal services to the Company and its education subsidiaries (University of Phoenix) as a practicing lawyer, interpreting laws, rules and regulations and advising Company personnel of legal rights, obligations and privileges. This includes practice in higher education state and federal law, regulation, accreditation, and other general legal matters and advice to the University.

Responsibilities

  • Provides counsel and guidance on legal implications of matters to senior Company personnel and University personnel in designated areas of responsibility
  • Determines or assists in determining the source of legal services to be used as situations develop, as well as reconciles and advises as to the Company’s recommended position on legal matters
  • Supervises outside counsel engaged by the Company. Reviews outside counsel billing to assure compliance with Company policy and efficient use of Company resources
  • Reviews, analyzes and comments on the Company’s legal obligations and advises the appropriate function head of the degree of legal risk on matters or issues within the assigned area of responsibility
  • Represents the Company as appropriate in its dealings with state and federal higher education regulators and accrediting bodies. Maintains operating approval in assigned states where the University operates. Attends targeted events, conferences and workshops with regulatory, legal and business communities
  • Maintains a professional and technical knowledge by attending legal workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate or foreign equivalent from an accredited law school required.
  • Minimum Ten (10) years of professional experience as an attorney at a private law firm, corporation, or governmental agency. Regulatory experiencerequired. Higher Education regulatory experience highly preferred, or other highly regulated comparable industry.
  • A member in good standing of a Bar of one of the fifty states or the District of Columbia

Additional Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate or foreign equivalent from an accredited law school required
  • Minimum Ten (10) years of professional experience as an attorney at a private law firm, corporation, or governmental agency. Regulatory experiencerequired. Higher Education regulatory experience highly preferred, or other highly regulated comparable industry
  • A member in good standing of a Bar of one of the fifty states or the District of Columbia
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of analytical, conceptual and strategic thinking to provide legal counsel and guidance to the Company, as described above
  • Must possess the ability to convey a professional image and effectively represent the Company as appropriate in its relationship with the legal, education, business, and government communities
  • Must be able to communicate complex and technical information on compliance and regulatory matters to persons with non-legal related backgrounds
  • Must possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to communicate to Company personnel organizational policies and procedures, as well as federal and state legislation, regulations, and state and federal rulemaking
  • Must have a working knowledge of personal software packages to prepare correspondence, spreadsheets, and reports
  • Must be self-motivated, well-organized, results oriented and able to manage several projects simultaneously under deadline pressure with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to creatively address and solve problems
  • Must be willing and able to work cooperatively in a team setting
  • Some travel is required
