The Senior Associate Director of Development is responsible for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of principal and major gifts in support of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Senior Associate Director will manage a portfolio of approximately 100 individual prospects, many of whom are strong gift planning candidates. The ideal candidate should be comfortable employing gift vehicles like bequests, gift annuities, and trusts—in coordination with the centralized Office of Gift Planning—in order to close gifts of $50,000+. This position will conduct 120 visits annually.
The Primary Duties and Responsibilities of the Job:
- Strategize with the Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations and the Director of Development to determine Carey Business School development goals and objectives and measurable fundraising activities, resulting in an annual work plan and mandatory stewardship plan.
- Manage a portfolio of 100 prospects with the goal of conducting at least 120 annual visits, in order to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors.
- Work closely with central Johns Hopkins Development resources, especially the Office of Gift Planning to coordinate and implement gift strategies.
- Staff the Dean and School and University leadership for principal and major gift donor visits, including the preparation of corresponding briefing documents.
- Work independent of direct supervision to identify new prospects of high net worth, and pursue those leads through the creation of proposals and closing of gifts. New prospects could be identified through analysis of giving history to the School, introductions from other donors, and independent research.
- Obtain a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching, and priorities of the Carey Business School in order to represent these needs both internally and externally.
- Prepare and direct preparation of funding proposals, solicitation letters, case statements and other cultivation and informational materials for prospects and donors.
- Participate in and manage special projects as needed (including events and other office based initiatives).
- Represent the Carey Business School on volunteer committees and advisory boards, as determined by the Director of Development. Serve on various Development and Alumni Relations ad hoc committees, as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Seven (7) years of experience, with at least five years of professional fundraising experience. Experience should include demonstrated success in individual solicitations (or in partnership with faculty) and in closing major gifts of $50,000+, preferably in a higher education setting. A gift planning background is strongly preferred.
