Job Description

Program Administrator for Special Education Grades 6-8

Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree Preferred
  • Massachusetts Certification in special education and as a Special Education Administrator
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in Special Education

Reports To: Building Principals and Special Education Director

Supervises: Members of Department (Grades 6-8)

Job Goal: Implement goals and objectives of the schools and the mission of the

Special Education Department. To plan, organize, and supervise the staff and the instructional program for the Special Education Department

Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Report to building principals about matters of special education/regular education coordination relative to curriculum, instruction, assessment and IEP implementation.
  2. Report to the Special Education Director regarding matters governed by special education regulations, policies and procedures and high profile cases.
  3. Interview and make appropriate recommendations regarding appointment and reappointment of personnel for the department.
  4. Supervise and evaluate performance of staff.
  5. Orient staff new to the department.
  6. Promote the professional development of department members.
  7. Meet with other Program Administrators and Directors to discuss common problems and to suggest school policy.
  8. Conduct regular meetings with department members to develop and to improve program content and practices.
  9. Approve all initial requests for attendance at professional meetings, conferences, and leaves of absence.
  10. Prepare special reports as requested by the Principals and Special Education Director.
  11. Assist in the preparation of the master schedule and special education liaison assignments.
  12. Conduct special education educational assessments for Initial and 3 Year Reevaluations as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
  13. Chair Initial and Re-Evaluation Team Meetings.
  14. Consult on all complex special education student cases, especially those that involve disciplinary action and/or possible transfer to an Out-of-District placement or the return from an Out-of-District placement.
  15. Promote early intervening and other proactive initiatives that help expand the capacity of the schools to meet the diverse needs of the student body without relying solely on special education services.
  16. Work with staff to develop in-house special education programs and services to meet the diverse needs of our students.
  17. Where appropriate, participate in the selection and recommendation for adoption of textbook and curricula activities.
  18. Coordinate the work of Teaching Assistants within the assigned program area.
  19. Participate in and coordinate transitions of Special Education students into JGMS and BHS.
  20. Consult with the Guidance Department regarding schedules of special education students and transition planning and services.
  21. Oversee the coordination of state and local assessment accommodations for Special Education students.
  22. Participate in those activities that keep him or her current with new trends in assigned program areas.
  23. Perform other tasks as assigned by the Principals or the Special Education Director.

Must possess the ability to:
  • Analyze complex student cases and identify the appropriate school response that complies with special education regulations, policy and procedures.
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the John Glenn Middle School Special Education Departments and set goals that will expand the district's effectiveness.
  • Lead the Special Education Department in improved regular/special education collaboration.
