Position Description

Summary: The APL Space Exploration Sector (SES) is developing highly complex spacecraft for a number of unmanned planetary, heliophysics and national security missions. APL/SES spacecraft perform in extreme environments and electrical systems design crosses many disciplines, including spacecraft command and data handling, interfaces and protocols, power distribution, autonomy, fault protection, EMI/EMC and charging. APL/SES is seeking a Spacecraft Electrical Systems Engineer to lead in the design of advanced spacecraft electrical architecture, and support implementation of the avionics subsystem. The candidate will work collaboratively with spacecraft and mission systems engineers, draft requirements and interface control documents, assist in the avionics subsystem design, and support program management. The candidate will be a member of a dynamic integrated product team and support all phases of product development, from early architecture through detailed implementation to integration and test (I&T) and flight support.

•Collaborate and coordinate activities with program management and hardware development team including electronics design engineers, software, packaging, test engineers, and manufacturing personnel.

•Lead spacecraft electrical architecture design and analysis, including definition of selected subsystem requirements (e.g., processor and recorder requirements, power distribution services allocation, and box and board level interfaces).

•Generate electrical system documentation; including requirements, costing, interface control documents, and test procedures.

•Assume responsibility for all technical aspects of the spacecraft electrical system; including, but not limited to, electronics systems detailed design, analysis, requirements, test planning, and provide technical oversight to procurements and hardware development.

•Present at program-level design reviews. Participate in proposal activities. Mentor staff to expand the group expertise in systems engineering.

•Participate in internal professional service (e.g. committees) and external professional service (e.g. technical conferences).

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related discipline.
  • At least 5 years' experience in architecture and detailed design of spacecraft avionic systems.
  • Hands-on experience in the design, development, and test of spaceflight electronic hardware.
  • Knowledge of proper handling of ESD sensitive electronics throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline.
  • At least 10 years' experience in architecture and detailed design of spacecraft avionic systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership of spacecraft subsystem teams.
  • Experience managing staff resources, cost, and schedule. Experience serving as a cost account manager, or similar.
  • Experience with electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility design and test.

Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
