Responsibilities

Contribute to the Mission Success of the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC)/Remote Sensing Systems Directorate (RS), working in a multi-functional Systems Engineering Department.  Primary responsibilities include providing systems engineering expertise to the Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) program.  

 

This position can be filled at a Level 2: Space Systems Engineer or a Level 3: Sr. Space Systems Engineer.

 

Key Functions

  • Apply disciplined systems engineering methods, processes, and tools in a broad range of complexity, from demonstration systems to full-scale acquisition systems, from pre-acquisition planning, source selection, design reviews, integration and test, to early operational testing.
  • Participate in architectural and conceptual design, technology roadmaps, requirements definition, acquisition strategy development, technology insertion, and acquisition of new programs.
  • Understand Customer problems and issues and turn them into tasks that can be supported by Aerospace capabilities.
  • Participate in program status assessments and independent risk assessments that inform management of perceived technical problems and recommend courses of action.
  • Collaborate with other Aerospace personnel to focus technical expertise in multiple technical disciplines to enable concurrent engineering approaches to address complex problems.
  • Work with Aerospace program office, Customer, and contractor personnel to identify needs, requirements and constraints.
  • Communicate tasks status, methods, results, and recommendations in briefings and formal technical reports. 

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications for Level 2: Space Systems Engineer 

  • Bachelor's Degree in science, mathematics or engineering from an accredited institution
  • 8 or more years of increasingly responsible engineering, scientific, or space system program experience
  • 5 years of systems engineering experience in one or more of the following: spacecraft, payloads, and/or ground systems 
  • Experience working cross-functionally within teams, handling multiple tasks, and the ability to work closely with Government customers, contractors, and other FFRDCs
  • A current Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance

 

Preferred Qualifications for Level 2

  • Advanced degree in science, mathematics or engineering from an accredited institution
  • 10 years or more of increasingly responsible professional engineering/scientific experience
  • Experience in space-related systems such as SBIRS, GPS, MILSATCOM, AFSCN, or Space Launch
  • Experience working with program office personnel on Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) space systems, or NASA/NOAA space systems
  • A current TS/SCI security clearance

 

Required Qualifications for Level 3: Sr. Space Systems Engineer 

  • Bachelor's Degree in science, mathematics or engineering from an accredited institution
  • 12 or more years of increasingly responsible engineering, scientific, or space system program experience
  • 8years of systems engineering experience with one or more of the following: spacecraft, payloads, and/or ground systems
  • Experience managing and leading teams/projects, handling multiple tasks, and working closely with Government customers, contractors, and other FFRDCs
  • A current Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance

 

Preferred Qualifications for Level 3 

  • Advanced degree in science, mathematics or engineering from an accredited institution
  • 15years or more of increasingly responsible professional engineering/scientific experience
  • Experience in space-related systems such as SBIRS, GPS, MILSATCOM, AFSCN, or Space Launch
  • Experience working with program office personnel on Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) space systems, or NASA/NOAA space systems
  • A current TS/SCI security clearance
