Responsibilities

The Space Environment Effects (SEE) Group provides scientific support to numerous SMC, NRO, NASA/civil and commercial satellite programs.  The SEE Group specializes in modeling and simulation of space environments. Typical activities include, calculation of orbital absorbed radiation dose in exterior satellite materials, laboratory-based simulation of space environment effects on materials, and characterization of space materials, coatings, and optics.  SEE Group members regularly design and conduct extended space radiation exposure tests using state-of-the-art ultra-high-vacuum exposure facilities.

 

Key Functions

  • Conduct basic and applied research in the area of space environment effects and radiation-induced degradation of materials in support of SMC, NRO, NASA, civil and commercial space programs
  • Write proposals to seek internal and external research funding in these and allied areas
  • Establish scientific expertise within the scientific community and National Security Space (NSS) customer base 
  • Collaborate as part of a team in ongoing research programs by performing state-of-the-art laboratory simulation of the effects of space radiation environments on materials and coatings
  • Take an active role in documenting test results to serve as deliverable product for customers and to contribute to corporate knowledge base
  • Develop innovative diagnostic methods for measuring optical and thermal performance of materials while undergoing exposure to simulated space environmental conditions
  • Oversee and perform space environment exposure tests and research including customer interface
  • Utilize modeling of space environment and calculation of absorbed doses in materials to design particle simulations
  • Perform optical measurements and other technical details related to the characterization of material response to simulated space environmental conditions
  • Perform data analysis using analytical calculations, modeling/simulation, and standard statistical methods
  • Participate in the analysis and interpretation of space environment exposure test data
  • Proactively support multiple NSS program offices as a corporate scientific advisor in the area of space environment effects on materials through the application of the results of laboratory research and the resulting knowledge base
  • Disseminate results through scientific conferences and peer-reviewed publications
  • Develop new research programs that advance the state of the art for materials for space satellite systems and provide recommendations for technology developments and applications in the areas of space environmental effects on materials to the DOD and NASA communities

 

This position can be filled as a Member of Technical Staff or a Senior Member of Technical Staff.

Qualifications

Required

  • PhD in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or other related discipline
  • Experience creating scientific publications
  • Experience working with laboratory equipment involving UV/VIS/IR spectrophotometry, high-voltage sources, and vacuum equipment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

 

Preferred

  • Current SBI clearance
  • Experience in space environment science and phenomenology or related space science materials area
  • Experience creating publications relating to the space environment and/or its effects on materials and space systems
  • Experience programming in LabView
  • Strong background in physical chemistry

 

 

Required for Senior Member of Technical Staff

  • PhD in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or other related discipline with 3 years of research experience
  • Experience creating publications relating to the space environment and/or its effects on materials and space systems
  • Experience working with laboratory equipment involving UV/VIS/IR spectrophotometry, high-voltage sources, and vacuum equipment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

 

Preferred for Senior Member of Technical Staff

  • Current SBI clearance
  • Experience programming in LabView
