Job Description
The Weather Company, an IBM Business, is seeking a Manager of Software Engineering. As a Manager of Software Engineering, this individual would deliver RESTful cloud services by balancing both agile management duties and technical delivery responsibilities. The management responsibilities focus on one to one interaction, setting and evaluating performance objectives, and career coaching. The technical responsibilities include working with team members to design, build, and operationalize a high-volume, scalable and mission critical geospatial platform deployed to the cloud. The effective manager will be proficient in Agile methodologies and team dynamics.

You will be part of a team that creates and serves weather layers for interactive mapping in every digital property at the Weather Company. These maps are viewed by Millions of users a day. In addition to that, the world’s largest brands in transportation, insurance, aviation and media depend on this platform for the most accurate and precise weather layers as well. Our team serves 50,000 requests per second via seamless, cross-platform technology. We connect clients and consumers to the weather visualizations they need, on any device.

This is done by aggregating rich datasets — both business and consumer — to create visualizations and insight which are delivered as personal, reliable, and actionable weather information. We develop cloud agnostic solutions that ingests 100 GB of data per hour producing over 800 different map layers and serves up to 4 billion requests per day.   • Contribute to designs and design documentation for high complexity software development efforts as a Manager of Software Engineering.

  • Facilitate design and architectural discussions, including soliciting input from team members to enrich the conversation

  • Effectively communicate status to Offering Managers, and engineering management as requested for deliveries and projects.

  • Contributing to the growth of the technical skills of the software engineering team members

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 8+ years Experience developing Object Oriented and/or Functional software (Java, Scala, F# or C#)

  • Passionate about individual development, team building, development flow and continuous improvement in the art of Software Engineering

  • Proven ability to work closely and effectively with daily contributors in a cross discipline development team setting

  • Passionate about individual development, team building, development flow and continuous improvement in the art of software engineering

  • Realizes the importance of responding to production issues and full lifecycle product ownership

  • Must be able to manage several active projects simultaneously while focusing on delivery

  • Be an adaptive communicator; Able to convey information concisely and clearly across various levels of the organization and with differing roles of stakeholders

Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

  • 2+ years of server side Functional Programming experience using Scala or Java (Akka)

  • 3+ years of experience in a managerial position

  • 5+ as a technical team lead with formal team leadership responsibilities

  • Experience with Test-Driven Development, quality built in, monitoring and alerting
