Job Description
Deliver expert knowledge on a wide variety of analytical chemistry techniques as they are applied to consumer food products, food manufacturing and development processes. Contribute to the fundamental understanding of food ingredient interactions of protein, carbohydrates, oil/fats, flavors and other components in consumer food products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Demonstrates and promotes the company vision
Regular attendance and punctuality
Applies GMP/GLP in all areas of responsibility, as appropriate
Able to design experiments to quantify changes in food processes and interpret data as it applies to products in development and commercial production
Experienced in liquid and gas chromatography techniques, particularly with mass spectral characterization of unknowns.
Knowledge of rapid analytical techniques for quantifying moisture, carbohydrates and other ingredients
Skilled in the use and interpretation of infrared instruments like FTIR and NIR
Drives and implements process improvement initiatives
Documents work in clear, concise manner according to laboratory standards
Excellent communication skills in writing and presenting data
Independently uses and performs troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and software
Effective time management skills to balance multiple projects
A leader in maintaining a clean and safe laboratory work environment and utilizes proper PPE
Performs other related duties as assigned
Will be exposed to food allergens (ex. Milk, tree nuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, etc.)
Work requires 25-50% of time in the lab
Conducts all activities in a safe and efficient manner
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill or ability required.
PhD degree in chemistry, food science or relevant field
5+ years of related experience
Alternatively, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemistry or food science
10 + years of experience with the applicable skills described above
Experienced with computers and multiple software programs used to manage experiments, data, report design and instrumental data collection
Protein chemistry and characterization in food dough and finished foods such as crackers, chips, cereals, bars
Knowledge of oil stability in cereal grain based food products
Characterization of complex natural flavors and colors
Strong ability to use analytical tools like spectroscopy and chromatography for troubleshooting food processes and identifying unknown molecules
Effective collaboration with scientists, engineers and business leaders
Ability to mentor less experienced scientists in a range of laboratory instrumentation
Able to design experiments to quantify changes in food processes and interpret data as it applies to products in development and commercial production
