The
Service Director, Planning and Permitting is located in one of our offices across Canada and reports to the VP, Environmental Sciences and Planning. They create value by:
- Leading activities within our Planning and Permitting service to achieve Matrix's growth, profitability, and operational objectives
- Streamlining operational decision-making to improve the efficiency of project delivery
- Identifying and advocating for strategic, technical, and resourcing needs that would have the greatest impact on Matrix's success
Specific responsibilities include:Strategy- As a member of the Environmental Services and Planning leadership team, contribute to the development of the Planning and Permitting strategy that is aligned with Matrix's overall strategy
- Expand our Planning and Permitting practice to establish a nationwide presence and increase our involvement in regulatory and policy decision-making across Canada
- Establish and execute plans to grow and improve our Planning and Permitting services including outreach to target clients, innovative approaches, improvements to service quality, etc.
Operations- Establish and maintain a strong safety culture for all employees within their service that is consistent with our values
- Maintain accountability for profit and loss performance within the Planning and Permitting service
- Make project-related decisions for planning and permitting projects including opportunity screening, pricing, investment, project role assignment and commercial decisions
- Make effective performance management (promotion, compensation, compliance and discipline) decisions for all principal and senior team members within the Planning and Permitting service
Growth- Work closely with business development leaders across Matrix to maintain a robust business development pipeline for planning and permitting projects that is consistent with our growth and profitability expectations
- Build and maintain client relationships key to the success of the service
- Monitor customer satisfaction with key clients across their service and take actions to create an exceptional customer experience
- Prioritize client and project pursuits and required resources within their service to align with the overall service line strategy
What We Are Looking For- An undergraduate or graduate degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Resource Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 15 years of environmental consulting experience in regulatory planning and permitting projects in Canada, minimum 10 years of experience managing professional staff and leading projects
- Direct environmental and regulatory related experience in various markets including power, mining, infrastructure, oil and gas, and midstream
- Experience with provincial (Alberta Energy Regulator, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Alberta Utilities Commission, British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office, British Columbia Energy Regulator, Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation, and Parks, Ontario Energy Board, Saskatchewan Ministry of the Environment) and federal (Canadian Energy Regulator, Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission) permitting requirements
- Collaborative mindset, able to work across geographies and disciplines to gain alignment with members of the Environmental Sciences and Planning service line
- Experience dealing with clients and managing expectations and delivery
- Strong business acumen, market presence/reputation and strategic vision
- Existing client relationships in one or more focus market sectors (oil and gas, midstream, power, mining, infrastructure)
- A valid class 5 driver's license with no restrictions
