Job Description

The Scientist position requires an in-depth understanding of instrumentation and techniques used for the preparative separation of small molecules, peptides and oligonucleotides in order to design, develop, and optimize purification processes for small and large scale purifications. These will support processed from development through to production manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) under cGMPs on larger scales. The Scientist role serves as the technical lead on projects and is tasked with creating an understanding of how purifications work on a fundamental level as well as how these processes will be scaled from a laboratory to a manufacturing environment while delivering projects on target with quantity, quality, time, and budget goals.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Designs appropriate plans to meet complex purification project goals within the required timeline and budget.
  • Recommends potential courses of action to clients and team leaders by providing solid results, findings, and technical solutions to project issues / day to day problems.
  • Proven track record of expertise of preparative purification by HPLC and/or SFC.
  • Ability to design and implement separations methods to enable the isolation and purification of reactive intermediates, impurities, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API).
  • Integrate state-of-art separations techniques and technologies into proposed projects.
  • Develop integrated separation science activities by collaboration with Analytical Development, Solid Form Sciences, and the wider Veranova resources.
  • Responsible for internal and external technology transfer of separation processes into the manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in development of achiral and chiral purifications and final analysis of purified compounds.
  • Drive continuous improvement to enable improved process understanding to ensure 'right first time' operation of separations processes.
  • Represent Chemical Development Separations team in internal and external technical meetings. Keeps accurate, legible and complete records of all experiments and observations.
  • Generates written progress reports and clearly presents scientific results to clients.
  • Exhibits a high level of safety awareness and conducts lab operations in a safe manner as well as holds others accountable for safe behavior in the work environment.
  • Multi-tasks responsibilities including: laboratory work, preparing scientific reports and documents, presenting scientific findings to clients and management, using scientific literature to solve advanced technical problems.
  • Performs additional scientific tasks with a high level of independence such as:
  • Continuous learning and growth in new scientific fields and/or deepening level of competence in major field of expertise.
  • Evaluates potential new projects and techniques.
  • Shares special skills and expertise with other team members and departments such as Analytical Development, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Production groups.
  • Learns and follows all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • To carry out any other duties which are within the employee's skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.

  • Works with other members of the project team to drive the technical facets of the project forward. Uses technical knowledge and ability to interpret literature data to design day to day experimental plans. Decisions affecting the broader scope of the plan or business are made in conjunction with more senior members of the group.
  • Generates high quality data, independently interprets results and draws scientifically valid conclusions. For less complex issues readily sets direction and course based on results and for more complex issues provides recommendations to senior members of the team before proceeding.
