Nalco Water, an Ecolab Company is seeking a highly qualified scientist to join our innovation efforts in the areas of sensing and automation as a Principal Chemist within the Water Anchor Research Development and Engineering (RD&E) group at our Naperville Technical Center in Illinois. This position will be responsible for conducting and leading problem-solving projects to deliver state of the art, high performance sensor and control systems for industrial applications. This will require working closely with customers, external partners, marketing and sales associates, and other divisional RD&E teams to design and execute test protocols, both in the laboratory and in the field, and effectively communicate results to stakeholders. We are seeking candidates who have strong collaboration skills, are action-oriented, have excellent communication skills, are creative problem solvers, and possess strong observation and perception skills. What You Will Do: - As part of a diverse, global, multidisciplinary cross-functional team, a researcher in this position will collaborate directly with other scientists, research leaders, marketers, sales teams, and customers to develop, evaluate and commercially deploy technical offerings.
- Develop new products, analytical tools, and systems integrating automation, equipment, and digital components to solve customer problems and deliver differentiated value in the area of water treatment for industrial systems.
- New opportunity identification, solution ideation, initial feasibility analysis, process and product development, leading to commercial introduction of new programs and customer solutions.
- Determine needs and specific system requirement for a project in its proposed environment.
- Craft robust yet economical architectural solutions using existing or envisioned hardware and software to solve customer problems in novel ways.
- Interface with engineers and architects so that problems can be resolved according to fundamental design concepts as well as user needs and constraints.
- Critically analyze technologies and their appropriate use to assure proposed architecture has optimal benefit/cost ratio.
- Determine optimal solutions from various available options and advocate for proposed technology to internal and external customers.
- Generate documents such as sketches, models, and user guides to maintain alignment between stakeholders and engineers regarding the solution to be provided.
- Generate and perform acceptance test plan(s) to ensure that technical and product requirements have been met.
- Lead projects and program segments to meet technical and business objectives.
- Provide advanced support for technologies within the existing product line and application area, following appropriate training
- Appropriately document and communicate all research and support activities using formal/informal reports and presentations at all levels of the organization.
- Provide consulting/mentoring on experimental design and work direction for junior associates.
- Provide technical support to assist the sales process. At times, this will require travel at a level up to 15%.
- Ensure that all research activities are performed with safety as the top priority.
Minimum Qualifications: - PhD in Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics, Physics, Chemical Engineering or related field and R&D experience; a Master's Degree in the disciplines listed above or related field and 3 or more years of R&D experience; a Bachelor's Degree in the disciplines listed above or related field and 5 or more years of R&D experience
- Experience in technical leadership, communications, and management of complex research projects involving multi-functional teams.
- Hands on experience with electronic test equipment performing software/hardware troubleshooting
- Proficient in data analysis
- Ability to travel up to 15%

Preferred Qualifications - Experience in programming (for example, Python, C++)
- Experience and interest in electronics design
- Experience in the experimental design and development of sensors and/or automation systems based on defined performance metrics.
- Participated in setting up a new laboratory
- Worked in diverse research environments
- Shown aptitude for applying novel solutions to complex problems
- Can set up data acquisition hardware.
- A strong record of delivering innovative technologies
