Job Description:

In the vocational department at Disability RMS, we want to be able to help individuals during their time of need. Disability can have a significant impact on a person’s life and can stress an individual’s mental and financial resources. Returning to work after a significant health event can address many of these stressors. This is a great career opportunity for you to assist disability claimants back to work, so that they can take the necessary steps to regain their independence.


The Vocational Consultant is responsible for providing vocational assessment and consulting to return disabled claimants to gainful employment. 


  • Evaluate all pertinent information and determine if claimant is a suitable candidate for return to work or the rehabilitation program
  • Counsel/advise claimants in vocational, motivational, and personal areas as well as in policy requirements and incentives regarding  return to work (RTW) and rehabilitation 
  • Maintain close, frequent contact with the claimant to provide the encouragement and support throughout the RTW and rehabilitation process 
  • Negotiate modified jobs for claimants who cannot perform all duties of a job as outlined in standard job descriptions either with the Policyholder or new employer
  • Identify accommodations, including assistive devices, that facilitate the RTW process 
  • Determine if referral to an independent rehabilitation agency/facility is appropriate and identify independent rehabilitation agencies/facilities near the claimant and select the most suitable agency/service for each client 
  • Authorize and oversee the activities of rehabilitation agencies in connection with the cases that are assigned, and authorize payment for services rendered by those agencies, as well as monitor the quality of service provided
  • Work closely with claimant (and independent rehabilitation representative in assigned cases) to develop appropriate RTW goals and plans
  • Act as a liaison between the claims and other resources and obtain, coordinate, and disseminate the information necessary to enable the claimant to work, this may include locating sources of funding or referral to state and/or federal agencies 
  • Perform transferable skills analyses
  • Supportotherclaims team by providing vocational assessments and recommendations regarding disability claimants 
  • Coordinate with the claims analyst to provide information regarding the impact of rehabilitation activity upon a particular claimant’s disability benefits
  • Develop rapport with community resources and referral sources via telephone, in-person visits, and professional organizations
  • Participate in educational seminars, conferences, client presentations and association meetings to increase knowledge of the vocational rehabilitation field 
  • Maintain claim file through up-to-date documentation of telephone calls and vocational rehabilitation activity as required by established claim procedures
  • Accurately prepare monthly reports concerning vocational consulting activity and impact on RTW
  • Participate in research and education activities for the vocational consulting team and assist with the training of the in-house vocational staff and claim analysts
  • Conduct labor market surveys utilizing internet resources and direct employer contact
  • Identify occupations and their material duties and physical demands utilizing a variety of government and internal resources which may include contact with the claimant and employer
  • Participate in formal and informal triages to assist with vocational related claim issues

  • Master’s degree in Vocational Counseling or related field and CRC or CDMS certification required
  • 3-5years’ experience in the vocational rehabilitation field required
  • Strong knowledge of vocational return to work protocols
  • Experience the disability insurance industry preferred
  • Strong research, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving skills and decision-making skills
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment
  • Excellent  verbal communication skills, with the ability to be both pleasant and professional
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to initiate and prioritize regular work duties and projects
