Omnitracs is seeking a Lead Operational SQL Server DBA who's focus is on administration for SQL Server databases across the entire enterprise. This role supports heterogeneous SQL Server environments such as but not limited to Development, Test and Production. This individual's responsibilities range from maintains plans, backups, restores and disaster recovery to DB design and performance tuning, ensuring maximum up-time with maximum throughput to meet established service-level agreements (SLAs). The candidate will also be required to work with enterprise architect, application development and operations to contribute to achieving a state-of-the-art environment that meets current and future business objectives both in on-premises and hybrid cloud infrastructure environments; train and mentor JR staff, technical support staff and applications development staff to better utilize our database environments; provides, maintains and designs tools to assist in the management of the database and transaction processing environment. Additional focus to provide automation solution to monitor and take action where possible for both transaction and data warehouse systems to provide scale and capacity assessment and planning.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Develops methodology for ongoing assessment of database performance and the identification of problem areas
  • Assist in development of processing database and computing environments both on-premises infrastructure and hybrid cloud (private cloud and public cloud like AWS/Azure)
  • Develops security scheme(s) for the database environment; plan and test disaster recovery processes and procedures to meet business's recovery point objective (RPO)
  • Install and configure new SQL Server via automation patterns and adhoc where needed.
  • As new systems are brought in-house, choose whether to use clustering, log shipping, mirroring, or other technologies
  • 7/24/ support including troubleshoot SQL Server service outages as they occur after-hours and weekends
  • Practical experience in pro-active and reactive database performance tuning.
  • Configure SQL Server monitoring utilities/tools such as SentryOne and Quest's Foglight and Performance Investigator (PI)
  • Provides leadership during the development and enhancement of production applications including working with development, technical support and operations during the design, development and implementation phases
  • Development both physical and logical database design in partnership with development; and development of administration functions
  • Work closely with middleware application administrators to identify the database resource requirements and to improve operational processes.
  • Deploy database change scripts provided by in-house development team or third-party vendors
  • Work with vendors in evaluating and implementing new technologies
  • Train, mentor and develop Jr level DBAs, technical support staff and development staff
  • Maintain and expand documentation of the company's database environments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field
  • EXPERIENCE:8 – 12 years of work experience as a SQL Server DBA, providing 24/7 support to mission-critical applications and databases
  • Solid and proven skills in managing database lifecycles - builds, patching, backups, recoveries, tuning
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative IT environment; experience with SQL Server 2008 to 2016
  • Experience in other open source database technologies like MySQL, Postgres,
  • Working knowledge of none relational database technologies like MongoDB, Hadoop, Cassandra
  • Working knowledge of common cloud platforms to host SQL Server, AWS, Azure.
