The Space Products Group of the Southwest Division of Applied Research Associates, Inc. has an opportunity for a senior scientist with software development or application expertise interested in supporting national security space customers located on Kirtland AFB through modeling, simulation and analysis (MS&A). This individual will be part of a team to provide scientific and analytical services for any combination of the Space Force Enhancement missions such as

  • satellite communications
  • missile warning
  • intelligence
  • surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR)
  • positioning, navigation and timing (PNT)
  • space situational awareness (SSA)
  • enterprise space battle management and command and control (ESBMC2)
  • space control
  • space support missions

The successful applicant will conduct decision analysis, capability analysis, system engineering analysis, trade studies, analyses of alternatives, design of experiments, military utility analysis, and/or architecture analysis using scientific and/or operations research techniques. Modeling and simulation (M&S) is a primary technique from existing or new M&S tools. Contributing new ideas and experimental approaches to research projects are key functions of this job.

The position involves the understanding of satellite systems operations, scenario development, study methodology development, M&S, and data analysis for ISR, PNT, and Comm satellite systems. The applicant should know the basics of assessing the utility of space sensors and systems, be able to analyze data, and have expertise in the common M&S tools. The ability to self-manage scientific projects is critical. System engineering approaches will be used on a variety of projects and the applicant should be able to contribute and potentially lead SE efforts and create and present work.

This position has the possibility to work remotely, depending upon agreements.

Tasks Include:

  • Lead projects directed by the customer
  • Develop analysis plans, new algorithms and processes to evaluate a varies of space system concepts
  • Perform analyses of data gathered, generated, simulated, or gamed to support insights to leadership of space concept options
  • Maintain and update existing software tools used for the MS&A effort in the space system analyses
  • Develop and apply graphical user interfaces and visualization tools where appropriate
  • Generate routine documentation of work in the form of results briefings, software code and documentation, vector checks to the customer and occasional oral presentations to study customers and organization leadership

Required Qualifications:

  • MA or MS in Engineering, Physics, Math, Operations Research, Computer Science, Aerospace engineering, Astrodynamics, Data Analytics, Statistics, or related fields
  • 7-10 years of experience
  • Knowledge of space systems and satellite technologies
  • Expertise in modeling and simulation
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Self-motivation and willingness to independently research a variety of topics
  • Strong oral presentation skills and interpersonal interaction skillsAbility to work effectively as an individual and in a team environment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which includes US citizenship

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity and/or experience with military doctrine, military operations, OPLANS, defense planning scenarios, wargames, and/or military exercises highly desired
  • Programming/Modeling Languages and or Frameworks experience
  • Cited publications in sensor performance and utility for space applications
  • Willingness to travel 1-4 weeks a year
  • Highly desired if candidate has a current clearance or current SSBI, less than 5 years old

Doctorate or better in Engineering or related field.
