We are seeking a creative, motivated engineer to help us develop new weapons systems for the US Air Force. You will have opportunities to perform groundbreaking development of new solid rocket motors to power these weapons. You will be responsible for leading the task flow for these propulsion systems from the conceptual design through prototype fabrication and test. You will provide supporting analysis and independent review of test data. You will participate as a member of hardworking, deeply knowledgeable teams of engineers all focused on developing and fielding new systems as rapidly as possible.


As an APL Solid Rocket Propulsion Engineer...

  • Your primary responsibility will be to provide technical contributions and leadership in the development of solid rocket motor propulsion in the relevant areas of analysis, modeling and simulation, hardware, integration, test, and evaluation.
  • You will regularly collaborate with Government sponsors, industry partners, and key Laboratory program and technical staff on activities related to the development and analysis of rocket propulsion systems.
  • You will document your work, including writing technical reports and delivering oral presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • You will lead and mentor engineering design teams.

Qualifications:

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a MS degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a relevant technical discipline.
  • Have 8+ years of direct experience in the design, development, and testing of solid rocket motors. Experience in areas including: advanced weapon systems development; solid rocket motor design; rocket grain design; nozzle design; multiphase flow physics; rocket motor erosion; rocket motor case design; high-temperature materials and structures; laboratory and field testing of sub-systems and systems; ideal versus actual performance evaluations; and novel vehicle designs and configurations.
  • Have an understanding of the state of the art in the areas of: materials and their manufacturing, fabrication, and applications.
  • Have a consistent record of accomplishments of successful technical work related to solid propulsion systems.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently, and excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Have high initiative, motivation, flexibility, and interest in working in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Are a U.S. citizen and are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date. Upon selection, a government security clearance investigation will be initiated to obtain a final secret clearance and to ensure the requirements for accessing classified information are met.

  • Possess a PhD degree in a related technical field.
  • Have deep technical knowledge of solid rocket motor development.
  • Have experience with industry standard tools and databases, including: SPP, SIG, OTIS, MATLAB, CFD tools such as CFD++, the CPIA database, SPURC, VIPER, and other applicable propulsion, CFD, trajectory, or signature prediction tools.
