A Brief Summary of This Position

The Sr. Software Engineer is responsible for the architectural design, development, and deployment of complex software applications. These applications (products) are used globally, by Valmont's customers, and are usually hosted on third-party cloud platforms. Defines system solutions based on user/client needs, cost, and required integration with existing applications, systems or platforms. Develops and socializes architecture strategies, standards and guidelines. Researches, identifies, selects, and tests technology products required for solution delivery.

This role includes difficult work on highly technical and involved projects which can present new and changing problems. This senior level role requires outstanding judgement, initiative and ingenuity, as well as requiring the incumbent to work both independently and as part of a team toward department and company objectives. The individual may need to devise methods and/or procedure to meet unusual conditions, and there is a responsibility to make original contributions in order to solve complex problems. Finally the incumbent routinely needs to mentor and support lesser skilled team members.

The Sr. Software Engineer reports to the Manager IT Software Products who in turn reports to the Vice President Product Development. Within the current organizational structure, the Vice President Product Development reports directly to the Group President of Irrigation & Tubing. The Sr. Software Engineer does not have any direct or indirect subordinates. The job level held is that of individual contributor and the function is within Information Technology.

Important Details about the Role

A Sr. Software Engineer is a professional role within information technology that designs the architecture of complex computer applications composed of numerous software components, like a user interface, Application Program Interfaces (APIs), database queries/SQL, etc. In addition, Sr. Software Engineers must be able to design modern applications to adapt to multiple Web browsers, screen sizes, as well as look and perform equally well on mobile devices. The Sr. Software Engineer helps to divide large and complex systems into manageable subsystems that can be handled by individual software engineers or other IT professionals.

Additional duties include understanding some Product Management and in-depth customer requirements as well as current technological and system capabilities so as to provide system construction recommendations with the right balance of features, performance and cost. The incumbent will be required to develop new systems as well as make significant changes to current systems. Finally the incumbent shall be required to explain often-complex concepts to different audiences, including non-technical individuals so as to gain the support needed to complete the project.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Seven (7) years related experience
  • Attention to detail and accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines
  • Knowledge of the material, costs, techniques and processes used within the area to deliver an infrastructure solution at a minimal cost to the enterprise.
  • The ability to work well in team environment and exercise technical leadership in planning, directing, controlling and coordinating team activities in support of product development.
  • Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results on system design and solutions required to support the enterprise.
  • Collaborates with Solution Architects and Data Architects on architectural decisions to ensure solutions are designed for successful implementation within the vision of the enterprise architecture.

  • Experience working with Developers, Business Analysts, Quality Analysts, Product Owners and Engineering teams in SCRUM/Agile frameworks
