An opportunity for a chemical biologist / protein biochemist is available to join a chemical biology group in the Department of Infectious Diseases. The group utilizes a multidisciplinary molecular approach for target validation across different therapeutic areas including immunology, infectious diseases, and pathogenic bacteria. Recent efforts focus on the synthesis and use of small molecule probes in combination with mass spectrometry metaproteomics to quantitate aberrant microbial protein families in gastrointestinal tract diseases.
The successful candidate will be responsible for chemical and peptide synthesis, enzymology, assay design, and proteomics to discover microbial proteins of therapeutic interest, as well as in the subsequent protein characterization by analytical methods (affinity purification, RP-HPLC, SDS-PAGE and Western analysis). This individual will also investigate the functional mechanism of bioactive ligands by biochemical, biophysical and cellular biochemistry methods. This is a basic research position that requires critical thinking, flexibility, multitasking and the ability to learn new techniques.
- Ph.D. in chemical biology, biochemistry, or related discipline with 2 or more years of postdoctoral or industry experience in biochemistry, proteomics, enzymology or relevant areas
- Track record of completing challenging technical problems independently and creatively, exemplified by publication of research in high-quality scientific journals.
- Experience in protein expression and purification, biochemical and cellular assays, construct design and molecular biology is required.
- Experience in bacterial culture, human tissue culture, and cell biology is advantageous
- Molecular understanding of small molecule: protein interactions is desirable
- Highly organized, motivated, work independently and collaboratively, team-oriented
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
