Senior Robotics Engineer, Control Systems
The United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) invites interested and qualified individuals to apply for the newly defined position of Senior Robotics Engineer.
UTRC is currently growing a new research group to study, develop, and transition relevant technologies for intelligent robotics. Robotic systems are expected to become pervasive across a broad spectrum of applications in which United Technologies businesses are engaged. The candidate will initially work under the aegis of the Control Systems Group, part of UTRC’s Systems Department. This group has traditionally supported the UTRC mission by advancing technologies and techniques that support the development of UTC components and systems, bringing innovative solutions in controls and related areas for use in both current and future products and services. The robotics enterprise is expected to grow rapidly and spin off into a separate research group within a short period of time.
Prospective candidates should have primary expertise in intelligent mechatronic systems and robotics with a combination of skills in multiple of the following: mechanical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, biomedical engineering, systems engineering and control engineering. The candidate should have experience with hands-on hardware and software development for intelligent systems, most preferably with robotic systems. Some experience with embedded software is preferred, with special focus on computer software development specifically written to control machines or devices and specialized skills for coding/development of intelligent systems hardware having time and memory constraints and for which some functions of the software are not initiated/controlled via a human interface, but through machine-interfaces instead. Finally, some experience with bimanual robotic manipulation is desired, in particular an understanding of two-armed, two-handed robotic spatial interaction for object handling and manipulation with visual feedback and, preferably, with tactile and visual feedback.
The primary responsibilities of the Senior Robotics Engineer will be to participate in research, development, application, and transition of collaborative robotics in the context of the UTC business units, including of Pratt and Whitney, UTC Aerospace Systems, Climate, Controls, and Security, and Otis for diverse applications that encompass manufacturing, service, inspection and potential new product offerings. UTC applications comprise aerospace (gas turbine engines and aerospace subsystems) as well as commercial (HVAC/R systems and components, elevator, fire safety, security, and integrated building systems).
Qualified candidates will have up to three years of post-degree work experience. The candidate is expected work effectively as part of an integrated team within UTRC to develop technologies associated with intelligent robotics, to work with UTRC program offices and UTC business units to understand near-term requirements and long term needs, in support of appropriate government funding agencies to enhance existing programs, support opportunities, and assist in the acquisition of contract awards. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, and the candidate is expected to have a strong record of publications.
The candidate must be a US citizen or US permanent resident. The ability to travel domestically and internationally (up to 20%) is required.
Ph.D. in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering. Must have specialized in the development and integration of technologies for robotics.
