Avery Dennison is seeking a Senior Product Development Engineer to join the Polymers, Adhesives and Coatings Excellence Center (PACE) in Mentor, Ohio. The role will require a hands-on approach to developing new formulations and scaling polymeric film from pilot plant to production scale in support of medium and long term innovations. The person is expected to apply materials science and engineering principles to drive product development efforts. Further, the role will require working closely with cross functional teams (commercial and operations) to insure projects are delivered effectively and on time in support of the marketing and business development activities. Excellent problem solving skills and an entrepreneurial mindset will be a key to success in the role.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
The primary role and responsibility of this role will be to:
Design experiments and run polymerfilmtrials on pilot plant extrusion blown and cast film assets in support of new product development. This includes designing the testing protocol of the films and analysis of data.
Lead the scale-up of the film products to film production assets. This may be internal to Avery or via external toll producing.
Make recommendations on the optimum film process (i.e. blown vs cast, stretch method, monolayer vs coex etc.)
Develop and apply various post processing techniques such as embossing, stretching and annealing as necessary to meet product needs
Work closely with technology and commercial platform leaders in support of the feasibility assessment and development of new polymerfilms
Lead and participate in stage gate and technical reviews and assist team in working through roadblocks
Develop knowledge of Avery businesses and understand short and long term development challenges.
Advance Avery’s understanding of polymerfilm development through application of material science and process knowledge
Grow to serve as a company subject matter expert in the field of blown and cast polymerfilms.
Ph.D. degree in Material Science and Engineering, PolymerEngineering, Polymer Physics, or Chemical Engineering with emphasis in Polymers – required
Minimum 5 years of R&D experience – preferably a strong background in cast and/or blown film
Knowledge of and experience with coextruded films is preferred.
Knowledge of post process technologies such as stretching, embossing and annealing of films is of benefit.
Strong understanding of structure/property relationships in films on a fundamental level.
Entrepreneurial mindset with a demonstrated strong skill in problem solving
Demonstrated track record of new film products from inception to scale-up
Ability to communicate across functions and geographies
Willing to travel up to 30% per year locally and globally
