Position Summary

Identifies stories, news and other communications needs, and develops and implements strategic media relations and public affairs plans and products to promote research, clinical advances, service lines and related initiatives at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Actively monitors, measures and reports results of strategic plans and related activities. Is both proactive and reactive in gathering and producing news and information for news media releases, web news and other pages, repurposing information for broadband (including social) media. Manages and provides media relations services to faculty, physicians, scientists, and staff, including communication planning, interview preparation, message development, press conference planning and communications training and counseling for events, initiatives and programs related to research and clinical advances. Has proven experienceworking with national and regional news media and demonstrated knowledge of academic medical center culture and activities. Has proven specific skills in medical and science writing. Identifies and promotes positive news stories about JHM and research/clinical activities to appropriate media. Identifies and proactively pitches consumer targeted stories to regional and national media, including human-interest patient stories and experts for breaking and trend stories. Leads efforts to establish, monitor and participate in e-communication and social media in order to appropriately promote JHM stories and activities. Works closely with other M&C staff to integrate and coordinate coverage of research and clinical news, and engages traditional and new media outreach to external news and other audiences. Assists in integrating information across M&C divisions, particularly for JHM official websites and publications related to specifically assigned areas of coverage.


A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in science, medicine, journalism, or public relations required. Master’s degreepreferred.


Proven knowledge of and extensive experience with national and regional print, broadcast and electronic media outlets, including Web-based and online relevant media/information sites. Demonstrated experience supervising and implementing effective external communications plans and strategies. Understanding of biomedical research and clinical practices and the use of social media as an evolving avenue for direct to user communications/public relations. Knowledge of health care institutions and operations desirable.


Outstanding written and oral communications skills. Preference given to candidates with demonstrated skill in translating complex biomedical science and clinical information into lay language for use in press releases, articles, and the web. Demonstrated experience in publication or project management. Must have demonstrated success in promoting academic medicine and its operations. Experience with creating, implementing and measuring strategic communications plans preferred.

Work Experience:

Five or more years of demonstrated experience in medical/science/health public information,

journalism, media relations, public relations and/or communications.
