McLaren Engineering, the engineered products division of Linamar Corporation, is a company focused on the design, development and testing of advanced automotive driveline and powertrain systems. Linamar Corporation recently acquired a conformable hydrogen pressure vessel technology, and this technology is being developed in the new San Francisco office of McLaren Engineering.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Analysis and design of conformable hydrogen pressure vessels; this includes the tank itself, as well as components that are required for mounting, manufacturing, and testing the tank
  • Leverage previous experience with composite pressure vessels to find fast solutions to technical challenges, and make design choices that lead to a robust and cost-effective product
  • Understand and advise on all aspects of ongoing technical development, including design, analysis, and manufacturing of composite, metal, and thermoplastic parts
  • Set priorities for technical development based on a strategic assessment of risks versus rewards
  • Make key technical decisions by synthesizing information from a wide variety of sources
  • Mentor junior engineers through root cause analyses of failures that occur during testing
  • Propose design changes for mitigating failure modes observed during CAE or testing
  • Interface with OEM customers to explain design choices and development priorities
  • Follow the automotive advanced product quality planning (APQP) framework including failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and the production part approval process (PPAP)
  • Mentor junior team members in sound engineering practices
  • Occasional hands-on work for prototyping and testing
  • Plan for overall project and component design timing

Minimum Requirements:


  • 5-10 years of relevant professional experience
  • B.S. in mechanical/civil/aerospace engineering; M.S. or Ph.D. preferred
  • Extensive experience with pressure vessels, composite materials, and/or hydrogen storage
  • Deep understanding of the fundamentals of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and materials
  • Demonstrated experience drawing key insights for design changes from simulation and test results
  • Proficient with mechanical design including 2D drawing, 3D CAD, GD&T, geometric and statistical stack-ups and manufacturing processes
  • Comfort with hand calculations based on first-principles analysis
  • Experience in some of the following areas:
  • Pressure vessels
  • Hydrogen energy
  • Automotive industry
  • Composite materials
  • High pressure equipment
  • FEA and/or CFD
  • Mass production
