The Role

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer for our Gigafactory in Reno-Sparks, Nevada to develop and engineer new processes and high volume automation equipment for Tesla Drive Unit assembly lines.  Our Drive Systems production lines include highly automated manufacturing systems for Rotors, Stators, Motor and Drive Unit assembly and tests.  Candidate will be involved on Tesla Drive Unit assembly lines from providing input to Product Design to equipment hand-off to Production and Maintenance teams.  Tesla Motors is a demanding company where you will work in a fast-paced environment on a critical subsystem of incredibly exciting products.

The Drive Unit Final Assembly lines processes include:

  • Fastening & Torque Application
  • Sealant Dispense Systems
  • Press & Thermal Fit
  • Vision Control & Precision Gaging
  • Conveyance & Robotic Handling
  • Leak Testing
  • Electrical & End of Line Tests (cold, hot, static and dynamic)

As part of the Manufacturing Engineering team, candidate responsibility will, after a training period, encompass specific processes on the Drive Unit Final Assembly line. Candidate will be in charge to design and build new processes as well as manage the procurement, construction and deployment of highly automated production equipment for our cutting-edge Drive Units. With significant automation systems design, build and commissioning experience, the Manufacturing Engineer will be a hands-on contributor to improve our current production equipment productivity as well as develop new high intellectual property processes. The Candidate will mentor Associate Manufacturing Engineers and interns. Candidate growth will include developing their expertise in a specific manufacturing field and/or manage a team of Manufacturing Engineers.

Responsibilities:

In addition to developing automation equipment and processes, the Manufacturing Engineer works with cross-functional teams throughout the entire lifecycle of the product. He/She works closely with Product Design Engineering, Quality, Production and Maintenance to take the Drivetrain components from initial design through prototype development and into full high volume production.

Equipment Development and Implementation

  • Develop process sequence, establish critical process parameters and process recipe
  • In-house development of workstations, manufacturing equipment and fixtures to support early stage prototype builds
  • Design, procurement, construction, animation and deployment of manufacturing automation equipment and fixtures for medium and high volume production
  • Management of suppliers during specification, design, buyoff and installation of manufacturing equipment
  • Characterization and validation of new equipment and fixtures for introduction to the production floor

Process Development and Implementation

  • Participate in early prototype product builds to characterize and develop both product and process critical parameters
  • Provide Design for Manufacturing feed-back to Product Design Engineering team
  • Development of new manufacturing processes
  • Creation of detailed Manufacturing Instructions to support new processes and equipment
  • Layout of production workstations and assembly lines for product flow, ergonomics and efficiency. Lines designed for scalability, continuous quality and productivity improvements
  • Specification of hand tools for assembly tasks
  • Performance of process analysis including PFMEA and capacity modeling
  • Implementation of product traceability and shop floor tracking

Requirements:

  • Proficient in complex electro-mechanical system design, GD&Ts from concept to detailing
  • Proficiency creating detailed drawings from solid models for various fabrication techniques (CNC/manual machining, welding, sheet metal forming)
  • Proficiency in mechanical assembly and inspection processes
  • Proficient in process characterization and validation using statistical tools
  • Proven track record of data-driven methodology to solve complex problems
  • Experience creating technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment
  • Experiencecollaborating with Controls Engineer to develop complex servo controlled motion control and PLC-driven systems
  • Experience with rotating machines, gearbox and AC motor assembly is a plus
  • Experience creating process documentation
  • Experience transitioning products from prototype to production
  • Experience introducing new products and new processes into a production environment
  • Experience with design for manufacturability
  • Knowledgeable about production quality metrics is a plus
  • Able to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Well organized with meticulous attention to detail
  • Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio
  • Proficiency using 2D & 3D CAD to generate Layout, assembly models and detailed part drawings for fabrication (AutoCAD and Solidworks preferred, Catia is a plus)
  • BS/MS Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 5-7years of experience as a hands-on mechanical automation equipment design engineer or project manager working on electromechanical systems
