Job Summary:

  • Oversees the development of timely and accurate reporting and financial analysis to Management and Executives throughout Staples Promotional Products and corporate finance teams to support strategic and operational decision making.

  • Provides timely customer profitability analysis to help maximize profitability through benchmarking, business modeling and process improvement analysis.

  • Manages a team of Sr. Applications Developers and SPP Customer Reporting Analysts that create, maintain and administer business intelligence tool(s), dashboards, scheduled reporting, customer specific reporting, ad hoc reporting and other reporting solutions and analysis.

  • Oversees the execution of new healthcare accounts – developing processes for accurate set up and on-going financialreporting with GPO’s.

  • Provide beginning to end reporting, analysis and business intelligence project management.

  • Maintenance of business intelligence tool(s) including technical support, upgrade schedules and implementations, administration of users and maintenance of software and licensing.

  • Assure data accuracy through periodic reportauditing to insure the integrity of the data

Key Job Responsibilities

Impact on Business

  • Presents key financial performance indicators through reporting and analysis to SPP senior executives and corporate finance team to measure overall results and sales trends of existing customers.

  • Identify complex data inputs from multiple sources, both internally and externally. Also identify new data sources that will enhance business outcomes and support strategic and tactical objectives.

  • Provides financial insights to leadership and management, leveraging expertise to include advanced understanding of trends effecting the business at detailed levels.

  • Assist in creating the monthly business review decks to the Executive Leadership team at Staples.

  • Facilitates monthly forecast based on current trends and business climate, with consultation from senior executives, and presents results to corporate. Works with all global SPP offices to facilitate trend analysis.

  • Develop best in class comprehensive analytics and reporting for our new company key business initiatives in healthcare and other business segments as required. Provide continued enhancement of the healthcare reporting. Act as a SME for any Healthcarereporting needs.

  • Provide Executive KPI reporting to assist in achievement of goals across the entire company in each department or function and the entire company as a whole.

  • Provide both summarized and detailed reporting for insights into business results.

  • Serve as the first stop for information for the entire company for both strategic and tactical decision making.

  • Responsible for mentoring and training Analysts.

Innovation and Change

  • Coach and lead the reporting team to:

  • Continually create new and different data analytics and/or deliver reporting.

  • Monitors and recommends areas of improvement on customer performance and other operational areas.

  • Regularly reviews, audits and improves existing reporting

  • Meets quarterly with SPP Executive team to further understand changing business needs and how to address new requirements with data and data analytics.

  • Implement new technologies and tools to put the information in the hands of those who need it.

  • Continuously look for new ways to report data, new data to report, new sources of data.

Internal & External Customers / Suppliers as well as Third Parties

As manager:

  • Develop relationships with Senior leadership and leadership at all levels throughout the company to ensure they are receiving the reporting they need to run their departments and the company.

  • Extensive interaction with SPP General Manager, VP of Finance, VP of Global Sales, Managing Directors, Directors of Sales and Directors of Operations, Staples Senior Vice Presidents and occasionally Staples Executive Vice Presidents providing financial analysis and support of varying types.

  • Lead the reporting team to maintain relationships with all of the major functions in the company.

Areas of focus:

  • Support the entire sales and customer relationship function by providing both internal reporting for sales measurement as well as external customer specific reporting for sales relationship managers (program managers and sales reps).

  • Provide reporting to organization for quick access and summarization of financial data and trend analysis

  • Provide support for supply chain management through inventory, vendor, merchandising and other relevant reporting and analytics to help minimize working capital and maximize profits.

  • Provide reporting and analytics to numerous other areas including marketing, information technology and distribution to drive process improvements and marketing effectiveness.

People Leadership

  • Oversees responsibilities and performance of team.

  • Recruit, hire and mentor the team of Analysts.

  • Conduct full performance appraisals and coaching for direct reports.

  • Review and approve pay actions for direct and indirect reports

  • Develops relationships with business units, regions, Worldwide Finance, and stakeholders.

  • Coach analysts on relationship development to enhance those skill sets with the team.

Business Strategy

  • Provides trending analysis supporting business strategy on a LOB basis and for overall business performance.

  • Ensures that reporting, forecasts, and analysis are accurate, reliable, and provided on a timely basis to SPP Executive Leadership and Staples Corporate financesupport teams.

  • Sets short and long term goals on roll out of business intelligence tools and staff assignments to insure business reporting and analytics are prepared for future needs of the business.


Education/Experience Equivalent (minimum requirements)

  • Must have a combination of business/finance and/or technical education and experience.

  • Combination of business related 4 year business/technical degree and 6 - 8 years of experience with reporting tools, databases or other reporting and analysis tools

  • 6 - 8 years experienceworking with multiple business functions and systems

  • 3 - 5 years managing a team that is responsible for reporting and analytics

  • 6 - 8 years experienceworking withdatabases and reporting tools. Must have strong grasp of database concepts.

Professional Certifications / Licenses

  • None required

  • Graduate /MBA a plus

Professional Knowledge/Experience

  • Ability to manage projects from beginning to end

  • Strong communication skills – Ability to speak technically with IT and have a good understanding of Business Operations.

  • Strong presentation skills with SPP Senior Leadership, NAD Finance and Staples Executive Leadership.

  • Ability to provide analysis of data and to be able to quickly identify trends.

  • Ability to gather requirements from end-users and translate into technical reporting requirements.

  • Ability to understand how business processes translate to the data in business systems and databases.

  • Experience training others

  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot and problem solve.

  • M.S. Excel expertise preferred

  • Strong leadership, analytical, and financial skills
