POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Manager, Materials Engineering will lead all activities for controlling the quality of materials into the recycle and Wilmington extrusion plants. They will also support production with materials and color issues, evaluate new materials and colors, improve current products through process/formulation/materials changes, evaluating competitive products to establish a benchmark, and to track incoming raw materials throught testing and evaluation of incoming COAs. The ideal candidate will possess considerable knowledge, skills and experience in a 24/7 manufacturing environment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Material Specifications
o Track trends in composition (HD/LD), material properties, and ash content by the supplier (Green plant & Wood plant) and disposition material appropriately.
o Meet with suppliers (both internal and external) to communicate trends / corrective actions
o Approve new raw material sources based on procurement requests.
o Work in conjunction with R&D on any new formulations to create a stable source stream.
Material Testing
o Pre-approval of materials prior to shipping to Green or Wood plants.
o Help suppliers set up material property testing at their facility.
o Develop capability to test materials prior to densification (internal) or pulverization (external).
o Set up extrusion testing further up-stream (Green plant); develop simplified procedure/equipment.
o Conduct or supervise tests on raw materials or finished products in order to ensure their quality.
o Design and direct the testing and/or control of processing procedures. Train technicians and lab workers, maintain inventories, and order supplies.
Material Handling
o Silo management to control material properties going to the extruders.
o Communication to plant regarding material property shifts prior to hitting the lines
Technical resource
o Provide guidance to process engineering, quality, and operations regarding material processing issues.
o Guide technical staff engaged in developing materials for specific uses in projected products or devices.
o Evaluate and drive cost reduction opportunities in the material selection and formulation.
o Analyze material product failure data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of problems and develop solutions.
