Job Summary

This position is responsible for managing the operational international tax functions for the company, leading tax planning initiatives, acting as an international tax technical resource to the department, and supporting tax and book reporting of Spectrum’s non-US operations.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

(40%) International Tax Planning and Tax Projects

  • Identify, lead and support implementation of tax planning opportunities to drive worldwide tax savings and effective worldwide cash recirculation and repatriation strategies
  • Support tax due diligence for targets; work with senior tax management and tax advisers to develop tax efficient acquisition and disposition structuring and post-acquisition integration plans
  • Both lead and act as tax resource on cross-functional engagement teams in completion of corporate tax and non-tax projects
  • Manage implementation of cross-regional tax initiatives

(20%) International Tax Technical Specialist

  • Act as an international tax technical specialist within the corporate tax team
    • Read, interpret, and explain international tax sections of the Internal Revenue Code, Regulations, Tax Treaties, IRS Rulings & Procedures
    • Instruct and train international tax staff in tax technical topics and tax research
    • Analyze and identify international tax implications of operational and restructuring transactions
    • Monitor US and non-US legislative updates; advise tax and other functions on implications of law changes for Spectrum Brands
    • Research and prepare technical materials for tax planning and implementation projects
  • Lead calculation of complex international tax calculations, including
    • Calculation of foreign income inclusions, GILTI and BEAT amounts
    • Calculation of foreign tax credits, overall foreign losses
    • Calculation and maintenance of earnings and profits, previously taxed income and tax pools
    • US Tax implications of operational and restructuring transactions involving the foreign operations of Spectrum Brands

(40%) Manage International Tax Functions – Manage certain of Spectrum’s international tax functions

  • Act as primary corporate tax resource for non-US finance personnel; develop and maintain relationships to foster coordination and collaboration
  • Manage completion of international tax provision functions, including
    • International tax calculations for US income tax provision
    • Review of international components of consolidated income tax provision
    • Review of international FIN 48 reserves
    • Review of international tax packages
  • Manage completion of international portion of US tax return
  • Coordinate non-US tax planning, compliance, and other tax functions with outside advisors
  • Act as corporate resource for defense of the Company’s non-US tax returns, including coordination with regional tax teams to develop technical tax positions and strategies to defend positions taken on the Company’s returns
  • Serve as principal internal tax resource for income taxes related to Canadian operations
  • Provide guidance and training to tax department staff
    • Ensure tax projects and deliverables are completed accurately, on-time, and efficiently
    • Ensure team progresses effectively and develops necessary skills.
  • Manage Spectrum’s transfer pricing function
    • Act as worldwide resource for transfer pricing
    • Monitor results and propose changes to transfer pricing methodology; work directly with advisors to develop positions and defend results
    • Lead worldwide inventory of documentation and support

Education and Experience Profile

  • BA in Accounting preferred. Masters of Accounting or MBA, concentration in Tax, preferred
  • 5+ years of relevant international tax experience required
  • Prior experience leading staff, other team members, 3rd party vendors or cross functional teams required
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
  • Proficiency in tax research (CCH, BNA) and tax preparation (CorpTax preferred) tools desired
  • Working knowledge of SAP and/or other ERP systems desired
  • Working knowledge of BFC and/or other financial consolidation tools desired
