Policy, Research and International Affairs (PRI) serves AARP by leading the development and articulation of AARP’s public policies, research and insights on the 50+ and issues that matter to them, importing best global practices, and strengthening AARP's reputation for world class expertise and thought leadership.




Summary

Collaborates with colleagues to write research reports and identify and analyze factors and trends affecting the financial well-being of the population 50+. Also develops materials to support team projects, such as conducting literature reviews, preparing presentations, and writing background analysis. Under the direction of senior staff, access a variety of data sources and use appropriate research methods to prepare data, analyze policy issues, and develop solutions.




Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of policy in the areas of financialsecurity and consumer protection.
  • Monitors legislative, regulatory, and public policy trends in areas as assigned.
  • Support the financialsecurity team’s social media and communications strategy through the development of tweets, blogs, and other methods of communication.
  • Demonstrates AARP leadership behaviors in all interactions.

Position requires the ability to initiate and complete work independently, to collaborate with senior staff on projects, to plan and manage one’s workload, and to complete work under tight time pressures. Employee must exercise good judgment in providing research assistance and technical advice to stakeholders throughout the organization. This requires a thorough understanding of the nature of the subject matter and the ability to interpret both the issue behind each request and the available data. The employee will be required to exercise judgment, tact, and time management in determining how to meet competing ad hoc requests. Position requires the ability to develop tweets and blogs and other communications to support PPI’s digital strategy.

The employee will occasionally represent the AARP Public Policy Institute at internal and external meetings.

By providing information and technical advice, the employee will have a direct impact on the achievement of AARP’s goals and strategic priorities. The employee will assemble and analyze data to identify problems faced by Americans age 50+ and others and help support the development of policy solutions.




Requirements

  • Completion of a Master’s degree in Public Policy, Economics, Finance, Statistics, Econometrics, other Social Sciences, or a related discipline, and 5 years of experience in policy development and/or research required.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop policy-focused social media communications, are required.
  • Proficient in use of Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Skilled in quantitative analysis (such as statistics or econometrics).
  • Experience with manipulating, analyzing and presenting data using SAS, SPSS, or other statistical packages preferred.
  • Knowledge of financial, economic, and consumer protection issues preferred.
