The Senior Fiber Design Engineer will be responsible for taking assigned fiber products from concept to release to market, encompassing and managing all aspects of the design and new product introduction process. In this role the Senior Fiber Design Engineer will oversee the delivery of products to project deadlines while balancing a sense of urgency with delivery of high quality designs. This role will be responsible for the development of PPC’s Fiber IP and patent portfolio.
Collaboratively turn ideas into prototypes using CAD and 3D rapid prototyping.
Ensure that designs do not infringe on third party patents.
Generation of own patentable IP through innovative design.
Project Management of all aspects of own product development from concept through to release to market.
Creation of technical & general assembly drawings and specifications.
Collaborate with third party manufacturers during development of components.
Work with the Manufacturing Engineering team to ensure that products are designed for manufacture.
Ensure products are released to market on time and meet all technical, cost and quality objectives.
Validate final design through dimensional and stack up analysis
Adherence to PPC New Product Development (NPD) processes.
Support and development of PPC Fiber’s long-term strategy – including development of new product families.
Act as a mentor to PPC Fiber Engineers.
Provide support in the development of company’s installation manuals.
Perform root-cause investigation into process related yield and quality issues including but not limited to workmanship, assembly methods, mechanical design and non-conforming material.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Bachelors in RF Engineering, Optics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
Minimum 5 years of design experience related to fiber optic products – such as connectors, passive components or enclosures.
Prior experience working in a top tier fiber optic company.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent knowledge and understanding of fiber optic technology and products.
Excellent knowledge and use of Solidworks or similar CAD software.
Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes such as injection moulding and assembly.
Good understanding of Design For Manufacture methodologies
Well-developed organization skills, including the ability to handle many details and multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while upholding quality standards.
Proven ability to lead a technical design effort and to manage resources from concept to validation.
Project Management skills, preferably MS Project.
Good persuasion and mentoring skills.
Ability to perform cost benefit analysis on project/improvement proposals and ideas.
Strong problem solving skills with excellent independent judgement and the ability to make sound decisions.
Effective verbal and written communication skills that clearly convey information and ideas.
Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Microsoft Project and Visio. Ability to produce professional reports including introductions, conclusions and recommendations.
